Ian Williams

Obituary of Ian Joseph Williams

1945 - 2023

We are saddened to announce the passing of our deeply loved son, husband, brother, father, and grandfather, Ian Williams, on Friday, April 27, 2023, at the age of 77 years.

Ian grew up in Nova Scotia, Sault Saint Marie, and Toronto, where he met the love of his life, and high school sweetheart, Louise (Malloy). They married in 1969 and embarked on a beautiful life together raising three children, Shannon Wiggan (Tim), Carrie Oloriz, and Ian (Amanda) Williams. They created happy homes in Toronto, ON, Richmond, BC, and Calgary, AB. He was the proud grandfather of Coulson and Sean Wiggan, Gabriella and Zoey Oloriz, and Nia, Ali and Roger Williams. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. James H. Williams, in-laws, Molly and Coulson Malloy, and his sister-in-law, Eileen Anderson. He is survived by his mother, Edith Williams, and sister Carol (Keith) McLean, and brothers, James and Wayne Williams and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Also left to mourn are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marie and Roger Sutton, with whom he enjoyed fun times in Naples, Florida and at their shared home in Canmore, AB.

He had a long career at Shell Canada, then worked later at Western Petroleum. He enjoyed a good book, his crossword, gardening, and golf, but most of all, time with his family. We loved sharing meals with him, his tall tales, and amazing sense of humour. He was generous with his time and attention and could always be counted on.

The family would like to thank the amazing medical staff on nursing unit 74, and the palliative care team at Rocky View Hospital, who took such great care of him in the final weeks of his life. His battle with lung cancer was fast and furious, but he went out as he lived, expressing gratitude, and love for those that were closest to him. He showed quiet strength and courage right up to the end.

He did not want a funeral, but requested family and friends raise a glass to his memory the next time they are gathered. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society at www.cancer.ca.

In living memory of Ian Williams, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, Ab t2x 3j3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
