Yuen Seto

Obituary of Yuen Tsing Seto

June 15, 1934 – Guangzhou, China

April 30, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Yuen Seto (nee Chow), beloved wife of Yen Seto of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at the age of 89 years.

Yuen was born on June 15, 1934, in Guangzhou, China, to Thick Woey Jew (Bill) Chow and Gom Sout Woo. Yuen has two older sisters, Lillian Quon and Ching Chun Kwan, one younger sister, Grace Quan, and one brother, Jason Chow.

Yuen and Yen were married in Hong Kong on September 17, 1955. In Canada, they lived in Mankota, Saskatchewan, working at Seto’s Cafe. Four children were born; Jean, Thomas, Joan, and Dan. Yuen, Yen, and family moved to Whitewood to open another Seto’s Cafe from 1967 to 1973.  Many pleasant hours were spent working and playing as the children grew.  In all of Yuen’s homes, she kept a large garden which fed the family and her soul.

Yuen and family moved to Calgary in 1973, where they still reside. In Calgary, Yuen and Yen opened Seto’s Grocery in Bankview. Retirement in 1987 left time to travel and babysit the grandchildren, Rachel, Adam, Michael, and Gabrielle.

Yuen spent time with extended family, Grace and Joe playing mah Jong and visiting.  Cousins Garfield and Jo-Anne got to spend plenty of time with the Seto children.  Being in Calgary, Yuen was closer to her stepmother Lai King Jew (Lai Chow) and father Bill Chow.  There were many family suppers and dim sum meetings with friends and family.  Yuen was happiest in the kitchen, cooking her favourite dishes and ensuring everyone was well-fed and had some to take home as well.

Yuen is survived by her husband of 67 years Yen Seto, her four children, Jean (Keith Curtis), Tom (Lorraine Nicol), Joan (Roy Chan), and Dan Seto; four grandchildren, Rachel Curtis, Adam Curtis (Kari), Michael Nicol-Seto and Gabrielle Nicol-Seto.  Also surviving are her sisters, Lillian Quon, Ching Chun Kwan, and Grace Ching Tsi Quan; one brother, Jason Chow (May),  her step-mother, Lai King, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her father Thick Woey - Bill Chow, her mother Gom-Sout Woo Chow, and her daughter-in-law Monica Droppo.
