Obituary of Lorraine Marguerite Baldwin

September 16, 1931 - Halifax, Nova Scotia

May 10, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Lorraine Marguerite Baldwin passed away to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 91.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she was the second youngest of seven children.  Married to William (Bill) Woodruff Baldwin in 1951, they moved to British Columbia in 1957, where they lived in various locations throughout the lower mainland before settling in Surrey. Having graduated business school, Lorraine worked as a secretary and spent several years teaching Grade two before taking time to raise her family.

Lorraine returned to the workforce at the head office of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) and continued there following her husband’s death in 1986 until she retired after sixteen years of service.  She served as President of the B.C. Widow’s Association, and in that role created many affiliated support groups throughout the province.  She was an active member of her parish church and a long-time member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL).

Lorraine was known for her kindness and hospitality throughout her life.   Together with her husband, their home was open to all and a safe haven for anyone in need. They often welcomed people in difficult circumstances to live with them.

During the Covid pandemic in 2020, Lorraine moved to Calgary to be closer to her family and resided there until her death.

Lorraine is survived by her younger sister Anna Morris, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, her only daughter, Anna Baldwin Wade of Calgary, her grandchildren, John William Wade (Yun), Rebecca Broadley (Nick), and Rachel Wade, all of Calgary, and her great grandchildren, Madeleine Sophia Broadley, Alexander Wade and Hudson Wade, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at AgeCare Walden Heights and to the staff of McInnis and Holloway for their many acts of kindness toward Lorraine and her family, as well as the many friends and relatives who accompanied her on her journey through the years.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of your choice.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church, (8944 Elbow Drive SW), on Friday, May 19th, at 11:00 a.m., followed by light refreshments in the church hall.  Interment will take place at a later date at Gardens of Gethsemani in Surrey, B.C.
