May 12, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Elizabeth (Betty) Letal (nee Mason) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, at the age of 91 years.

Betty was born in Granum, AB, on December 27, 1931, where she lived on the Mason family farm, until she married Joseph Letal in November 1952. As a new couple they moved to the Letal family farm near Barons, AB, where they resided until 1959, when they moved to Calgary, AB.

Betty was an active member of McDougall United Church for many years, participating in the Ladies Fellowship Group and Prayer Circle. Betty was dedicated to her role as a mother and volunteered at many of her children’s activities.  She was a Girl Guide Leader, a softball coach and a big fan at all of their activities, even when she wasn’t leading them. Betty also participated in a Ladies bowling league at Toppler Bowl for many years. Betty was an accomplished seamstress and knitter and created many outfits for herself, her children and her grandchildren.

Once Betty’s children were grown, she travelled to many places across Canada, the United States and Europe, mostly traveling with her favorite companion, her twin sister, Winnie. In 2010 she travelled to Saudi Arabia to visit her daughter and son-in-law. Card and board games were a big part of family gatherings. She was a very skilled player and her children had to learn how to take losses gracefully when playing against her.

Betty is survived by four daughters, Linda Mader of Priddis, Cathy Sherba of Cochrane, Eva (Greg) Chumik of Calgary, and Cheryl (Albert) Cotterhill of Calgary; six grandchildren, Andrea (JD) Scheller of High River, Taryn (Randy) Peardon of Arnprior, ON, Michael Sherba of Cochrane, Gillian Sherba of Tuscan, Arizona, Leland Chumik of Ottawa, ON, and Quinn Cotterhill of Calgary; two great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Scheller and Katherine Scheller, both of High River.  Betty is also survived by four siblings, Robert Mason of Calgary, twin sister Winnifred Hansen of Calgary, Donald Mason of Granum and Marjorie Lane of Lacombe.

Betty was predeceased by her husband Joseph in 2003; her sons-in-law, George Mader and Eugene Sherba; her siblings, Kathleen Jassman, Eleanor Reid and Alice Williamson; and her parents W. Thomas Mason and L. Jean Mason.
