Obituary of Joan Frances McLauchlin
October 16, 1945 - Creston, British Columbia
May 15, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
Joan McLauchlin passed away suddenly at Wentworth Manor on Monday, May 15, 2023 at the age of 77.
Joan was born in Creston, BC, to Bob and Edith Currie, and moved to Calgary, AB, at age nineteen to attend secretarial school. She worked at the Holy Cross Hospital for several years, where she met lifelong friends. She later worked at Texaco Canada in the Health Centre, followed by Imperial Oil as a land analyst. After a fateful blind date, Joan and Larry fell in love and were married in August 1967. Joan embraced motherhood with the birth of her twins, Robb and Jenny, and loved being granny or gran gran to her beloved grandchildren.
Joan was an exceptional mom, granny, and friend and was well known for her sense of humour, giving nature, and selflessness. Joan always put family first, and they knew how much she loved them. She loved helping others, whether it was attending services or working in the kitchen at Living Spirit United Church, looking after elderly friends, driving her kids to Highland dance or bagpipe band lessons, or babysitting her grandkids. Joan was a force to be reckoned with. Her cleaning, and organizational skills, and her love of shopping, were well known. There wasn’t a bargain or garage sale that Joan could pass by.
Joan loved her Scottish heritage and finally got the chance to visit the “motherland” in 2016 with her children, and grandson, Aidan. Joan loved every minute and made some amazing memories, including getting a poor farmer to call his Highland “coos” over for pictures with these strange Canadians! She also cherished her summer days spent at Carefree Resort with her family.
Family meant everything to Joan, and she will be sorely missed by her son Robb McLauchlin (Kerri-Ann), daughter Jenny Huizinga (Paul), and grandchildren, Aidan, Ainsley, K, and Jack. She is also survived by her brother, Ian Currie, many dear friends, and family. She was predeceased by her husband Larry in 2008.
Joan loved her family, and friends dearly and we are so very lucky to have called her mom, granny, and friend.
