Obituary of Madge Gorrell
GORRELL, Madge Christine (nee Johnson)
July 10, 1935 - Edmonton, Alberta
May 19, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
It is with profound sadness that the family of Madge Gorrell announces her passing on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 87 years of age.
Madge grew up on the family farm in Darwell, AB. She moved to Edmonton in her late teens and fell in love with Glenn soon after. They married in 1954 and added four children to their family over the next five years. Madge reveled in her role as a homemaker and proud mom. During their 68-year marriage, Glenn’s career took the family to various cities across Canada and Madge made a home and many friends everywhere they lived. After retiring, Madge and Glenn spent their winters in Mesa, AZ, where the warm weather, golf and great relationships proved to be the perfect second act to an already wonderful life.
Madge was the definition of a people person and was happiest surrounded by family and friends. Glenn described Madge as their social convener, and she embodied that role, hosting gatherings filled with humour and good food, making everyone feel welcome. Once Madge called you her friend, you were a friend for life. But nothing was more important to Madge than her family, whom she loved unconditionally. She was the proudest mom, grandma, and great-grandma. Madge held an immense role within her family, and her passing will leave a void in so many lives. Her children are grateful to have been by her side in her final days.
Madge is survived by her children, Lynn (John), Miles (Suzanne), Blaine (Jane), and Leigh; her grandchildren, Jason (Mindy), Kerri (Jeremy), Veronica (Chad), Victoria (Joseph), Evan (Michelle), Tyler (Samantha), Taryn (Rick), Madeline, and Katherine (Michael); as well as thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Maxine, Dennis, Ron, Richard, and Denniece. Madge was predeceased by her husband Glenn, her son-in-law Paul, her parents, Matthew and Mary; and her siblings, Ruby, Lloyd, and John.
A Celebration of Madge’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
