Obituary of Roy Michele Ponte

October 31, 1938 – Fort McMurray, Alberta

May 28, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that the family of Roy Michele Ponte announce his passing on May 28, 2023, at the age of 84.

Roy was born and raised in Ft. McMurray, AB.  After high school graduation, he worked on the dredges to earn money for college.  Upon completing a three-year program at Radio City College in Toronto, he worked for Marconi and then Motorola Canada, retiring in 2000.

In retirement, Roy became heavily involved with the Calgary Seniors Essential Transportation program driving seniors to medical appointments.  Over 20 years he drove more than 100,000 km.  In recognition of his contributions Roy was honored with the Minister of Seniors Service Award in 2011 and the Queen Elizabeth 11 Platinum Jubilee Medal (Alberta) in 2023.  He also volunteered for fifteen years at the Braeside Community Owned Police Station and was fortunate to travel to Disneyland on several occasions with Dreams Take Flight.

Roy had a zest for life, a keen sense of humor and was a man of many interests.  He excelled at skiing, teaching his children and wife to enjoy the slopes.  In 1987 Roy earned his Private Pilot license and a Commercial rating in 1989.  He purchased a plane (GRFH) and enjoyed adventures over the years travelling to northern Canada, and Alaska.  Golfing was another passion, and he took many trips south with the guys to “work” on his game.  Roy achieved the elusive “hole in one” on the fifth hole at Woodside Golf Course. Roy and Dianne were fortunate to enjoy vacations to Spain, Greece, Italy, Great Britain, and Cuba during their years together.

Roy was predeceased by his parents, Michele and Lilian Ponte, and his sister, Doreen Ross.

Leaving to mourn, but forever grateful for having Roy in their lives are:  his loving wife of 42 years, Dianne; his daughter Dolores Liddle (Gerry Klassen}; sons Darren Ponte (Tracey Hardage) and Clinton Ponte (Liza); grandchildren Nicole (Jimmy), Daryl, Josh, Geoff,  Kristin (Tyler), Luke (Idaylia), Grace and Zakk; great grandchildren Braiden, Ethan, Hudson, Janie and Ember; his sister Dolores Wood; his brother David Ponte (Trish Quinn); brother-in-law Larry Cooper; sister-in-law Barbara Cooper (Ralph Clark); many nieces and nephews; dear friends; and the mother of his children, Mary Bleile..

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, health care aides and doctors of Unit 74 at Rockyview General Hospital for their compassionate care.
