Obituary of Leona Marguerite Mitchell

January 15, 1929 – Calgary, Alberta

March 14, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Leona (Noni) Mitchell, beloved wife of the late Walter Mitchell, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the age of 95 years.

Leona was born in Calgary, AB, on January 15, 1929. She married Barney Mitchell in 1954 and they would have celebrated their 69th anniversary on November 6, 2023.

She was a long-time member of the national women’s charitable organization, I.O.D.E., and did many hours of volunteering with them. She was also a member of the Elks Golf and Country Club.

She worked part-time as a Comptometer operator for several months every year in her younger days, and she also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing bridge, doing puzzles, making fresh bread, baking yummy cookies, cakes, and pies, golfing, curling, as well as camping in their fifth wheel travel trailer.

Leona is survived by her son Ken Mitchell (Valerie) of Calgary, AB, her daughter Karen Mitchell (Kathy) of Dallas, TX, her grandchildren, Tyler Mitchell (Amanda) of Pit Meadows, BC, and Britney Axworthy (Wynn) of Calgary, AB; as well as her three great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Lydia, and Theo. She was predeceased by her loving husband Walter, and her parents, Hazel and George McLarty of Calgary, AB.

Leona requested this poem be shared upon her passing:

When I am gone.

Release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do. You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears, be happy that we had so many years. I gave you my love and you can only guess how much you gave me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown, but now it’s time I travelled on alone. So grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must, then let your grief be comforted by trust. It’s only for a while that we must part. So bless the memories within your heart. I won’t be far away, for life goes on. If you need me, call and I will come. Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near and if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear all my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you must, come this way alone, I’ll greet you with a smile and say welcome home.

Leona and Barney, together again, in Heaven.
