Marjorie Matheson

Obituary of Marjorie Ann Matheson

April 7, 1951 - Three Hills, Alberta

May 28, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Born on April 7, 1951, in Three Hills, Alberta, as the first born to retired Airforce members William and Ada Major, Marjorie grew up on the campus of Prairie Bible College. After graduating high school, she split most of her adult life between Alberta and Northwestern Ontario.

In her 30's, Marjorie returned to school as a single Mother of three to earn her Master's in Social Work from the University of Calgary. She spent her 25-year professional career with the Children’s Aid Society while volunteering as a member of the Rotary Club and the Lake of the Woods Hospital board in Ontario.

In 2006, Marjorie began participating in the Royal Canadian Legion Kenora Branch #12, where her father was a founding member. In 2017, she retired to Calgary, to be close to her children and grandchildren. Marjorie transferred her membership to Royal Canadian Legion Branch #285, eventually proudly becoming Comrade Marge Matheson Secretary. When she wasn’t taking minutes, doing maintenance, or helping with the monthly newsletter, she was dedicated to documenting the most senior Veteran’s history and stories. She found much fulfillment from assisting our Veterans while honoring her family’s history.

Marjorie’s other passion was politics. She believed strongly in democracy and encouraged participation. This came from her mother, and she was sure to pass it on to her children and grandchildren. She spent her final days participating in the UCP's campaign fight to keep Alberta strong and free.

Sadly, on Sunday, May 28, 2023, Marjorie Ann Matheson passed away with her children and grandchildren by her side.

Marjorie was a beautiful person inside and out who loved playing card games, music, traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She carried herself with integrity, class and most of all compassion.

Marjorie was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who had an endless supply of enthusiasm and encouragement. She will be remembered for her loving smile, rebellious nature and witty humor. She spent her life dedicated to her family and serving her community, country and Veterans. She will be dearly missed by many.

Marjorie is survived by her three children and their spouses, Jesse (Sarah) Matheson of Sheffield, England, Dylan (Christa) Matheson of Calgary, AB, and Megan (John) Di-Bella of Calgary, AB. She also leaves behind her three grandchildren, Amber (Olivier), Cole, and Chaise, who all live in Calgary. Marjorie is also survived by her three siblings, Donna Dean, Matthew (Ruth)Major and William (Judy) Major, all residing in Ontario; along with several nephews and nieces throughout the country.

A Memorial Service for the Celebration of her Life will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #285, (9202 Horton Road SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. with reception to follow. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

In lieu of any flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the Royal Canadian Legion Kenora Branch #12, the Royal Canadian Legion Calgary Branch #285, or the Foothills Hospital Neurology Department Calgary.
