Condolences
My name is Wayne Bennink and I had the honour of serving with Major Grant Schmick at the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Studies or CFSAS at 17 Wing Winnipeg in the mid to late 90;s. This senior officer was a very interesting professional officer with a laugh and smile that would not quit. It kind of grew on you....We served together for almost 1.5 years....and it was the highlight or best time of my military career. Off the cuff, he would teach me about electrical engineering that later on in years helped or guided me through college and engineering at U of M.
I was proud as punch to serve with him and what an incredibly talented individual...Always there to guide me and had not only an encouraging word, but how to get the best out of life and strive hard to obtain your dream. I am very sorry for his illnesses, but he was always a fighter...like a fighter pilot....and I was shocked and hurt to see or hear of his passing. Major Schmick, you will always be in my heart and never ever forgotten....Rest In Peace Sir....You have left your mark on this earth...Per Ardua Ad Astra....Wayne Bennink, MTA, CD2, CF Ret;d. CF Veteran...
I am profoundly saddened to learn of Grant’s passing. To Bernie, David, Kyle and all his family members and loved ones I offer my sincere condolences.
I well remember Grant’s irrepressible sense of humour . . . He could always be relied upon to lighten the mood, in even the most difficult - and yes, inappropriate, circumstances.
It is readily apparent that Grant’s life was one ‘well-lived’ and that he loved his family dearly. I know too from experience that his loved ones will be comforted by many joyful memories as time passes.
So very sad to hear this news about cousin Grant. Grant was a couple of years older than me and I always enjoyed visiting Uncle Sam and Aunt Ada because Grant would let me hang out "with the boys". He was kind and gentle even then. Please accept our deepest condolences, all. Moe & Spike Kacsmar, Calgary
My deepest Condelances to the family. Grant was a very special client of mine , I worked with him for many years providing him with clothing and items for the Calgary Football Assoc. He was truly a beautiful man . I will miss our converstions about his Military years and football chats. RIP Grant. Your truly one of the BEST !
My most sincere condolences on the passing of my cousin, Grant.
Sorry to hear of Grant’s passing. He was a good friend and boss, and a fine member of our Flames ticket group over the years. Will miss him. My condolences to Bernie and family.
How very sad we are to hear of Grant's passing. He was a wonderful friend and Jayne and I remember the Winnipeg years with great fondness. Rest in peace, old friend.
My wife Janice and I were also so very saddened to learn of the loss of Grant, aka Schmicker. We did not know he had cancer and were so pleased to learn of his overcoming of heart disease and heart replacement. He was a true friend to so many; warm, friendly, approachable, easy going, quick to share his thoughts and feelings. After sharing time with him at Royal Roads and RMC and meeting his family on his home farm in Alberta, I think of our time together in Ottawa. All the cross-country skiing in Gatineau which, while not a favourite activity of his, he participated in with willingness and enthusiasm. The year-round gatherings of classmates at his home in Orleans where his was always the best gathering spot. I think of his Commodore 64 purchased well before anyone else thought personal computing had a future. I think of his recent visit to our cottage Ambleside along with Bernie and her brother. I think of how fortunate he was to have Bernie and her caring, compassionate, understanding and tolerant nature, as well as his two boys and grandchild. I was surprised at just how painful I found losing a true friend after these many, many long years. So long my friend and best wishes to Bernadette, David Kyle and your families.
Some of my most favourite memories of our time in Lahr are of the New Year’s Eves we spent with Grant and Bernie and the boys. We were so sorry to hear of your loss, Bernie, David and Kyle.
It was with great sadness that we learned of Grant's passing.
"Schmicker" as he was known to his many military college friends was a character in the most positive sense of the word: he was enthusiastic, up, warm, loud, one of a kind, engaging, ready for anything, enjoying life, with a keen sense of humour, someone you wanted to be around. He was a true friend. Our paths haven't crossed in a while but that bond remains and I count myself fortunate for the time we did have in Alberta (with a memorable road trip in his Dad's camper down to Vegas) and in Ottawa, first by himself and them with Bernie. The arc of his life brightened the lives of those who knew him.
Anita and I send our thoughts to you Bernie and the family, and our love.
Chich
For Bernadette , David and Kyle, please accept our heartfelt condolences at the the passing of Grant. As a fellow Roadant (Royal Roads), Grant had a special sense of humour which put him in good stead where ever he served. I will remember him.
Bernadette, David and Kyle, I am very sorry to have learned about the passing of Grant. It was a pleasure to do work with him, here some of his stories and share a laugh. He was a wonderful man. Steve Shannon
Dear Bernie and family,
I was so sorry to hear of your loss.
Although, we were not the closest of families, I remember fondly the time we spent together during the time Grant was posted to Winnipeg. You guys were the family we had never had a chance to know becsuse of our Dad being posted all over, includind 2 stints in the UK . Our family was all in Alberta.it was so nice to have cousins and their children around. Our Dad was always so proud of Grant.
My condolences to all and so sorry for your loss. I officiated with Grant and am sad to hear of his passing.
I knew Mr. Schmick as Kyle’s dad. I must admit, at first, as a kid, I was a bit intimidated by Mr. Schmick, but over the years I learned he was a very kind and caring person. He helped me and Kyle’s other friends get out of trouble. He had a great handshake which told you a lot about him: firm, reasonable, and good natured. He’s spent the last 30+ years showing his sons and their friends how to be men, and I know that the positive qualities in Mr. Schmick will always echo in his sons. My condolences to Mrs. Schmick and the whole family.

Grant will be greatly missed as a brother-in-law and a friend. He was a man with a good sense of humour and wit. He had great devotion to family and was really looking forward to the role of grandfather and spoiler. Grant enjoyed his connections to sports and took great pride in his contributions to football.
We spent some great times with Grant & Bernie, either at our place, or their house, just visiting, touring or playing cards, and a very memorable two weeks in Mexico.
Rest in Peace Grant, you will be missed!
Although I saw Grant only two or three times in the intervening 54 years, we were good friends all through Junior High and High School. I hope Grant's family can find comfort in a life well lived. My condolences on his passing.
I’ve known Grant for many years through football. He was fun, dedicated and as fair as could be. We always had a good time working on and off the field together it more importantly, he was a good and kind man who took his health issues in stride. The world has lost a good man. I will miss you Grant.
