Silvestro Sciore

Obituary of Silvestro Sciore

December 31, 1927 - Villalago, L’Aquila, Italy

May 30, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved, gentle shepherd, Silvestro Sciore on May 30, 2023.  Husband, father, nonno, bisnonno, uncle and friend, he has guided us with love and care all his life.

Silvestro was born in Villalago L’Aquila, Italy, the youngest of six children.  He attended school for grades one to five, then worked alongside his family living off the land, running a butcher shop and mostly tending their flock of sheep up in the mountains.

He married the love of his life, Vittorina, and in 1962 with a seven-year-old daughter and a nine-month- old son, made the ocean crossing to Canada.

Silvestro and Vittorina worked hard to build a great life for their family.  At first he worked as a labourer – mortadella sandwich in hand he walked downtown, taking day jobs where he could.  Soon he was hired at Canada Packers where he worked for twenty-seven years.

In his retirement, he bought an acreage that became known as “The Sciore’s Little Ranch” and returned to his roots by raising sheep, goats, and chickens, tending a large garden and making cheese.  During this time, family, friends and strangers enjoyed the bounty of his labours and he repaid them with friendship and love.  Never a day went by without many visitors.

Silvestro was a lifelong learner and teacher, a man of hope and vision, with strong beliefs in hard work, family and education.  He encouraged his children and grandchildren to reach for opportunities he never had and gently guided them to find their way.  Never boastful, he worked at his drawings and quietly presented each grandchild with a meaningful sketch of “a day in the life of Nonno”.

Silvestro was proud of his home and all of his family.  He befriended, gave simple advice and helped everyone he knew in his generous and compassionate way.  He was happiest when the house was full, eating and laughing, especially with his grandchildren and all their friends at the table that got bigger every year!  He loved his great-grandchildren fiercely and felt blessed to be able to celebrate life with them.

We will never forget him – his courage, determination and passion for life that inspires each of us to live as he has with care and love for all.

Silvestro is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Vittorina; his daughter Aurora Musto; his son-in-law and great friend, Richard Musto; his son Adelmo (Mary Lyn); beloved grandchildren David, Michael (Aimee), Jessica (Kyle), Chantel (Jack) and Rachel.  He leaves his most precious great-grandchildren Cormac Silvestro Musto and Etta Grace Musto.  Silvestro is also survived by his nephew Paul Iafolla and countless nieces, nephews and friends in Canada, Italy, and the United States.

The last of his family of origin, he was heartbroken to lose his brothers Aquilino and Adelmo in World War Two, his parents Giuseppe and Maria, sisters Annina and Antonietta and his brother Emidio.

Silvestro was always healthy and strong until the last few weeks of his life.  He was surrounded by his family when he quietly and reluctantly slipped away.

His family wishes to thank everyone for their loving support from coast to coast and far away.  We thank Dr. Reynolds, Home Care, Palliative Care and Fr. Jonathan Gibson for helping us to care for Papa in his home as he wished.

Always in our hearts; forever missed:  Still our Shepherd!
