Brigitte Moreau

Obituary of Brigitte Roswitha Moreau

March 5, 1944 – Schwagerau, Eastern Germany

June 9, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Brigitte Roswitha Moreau, beloved wife of the late Joseph (Alex) Moreau of Calgary, passed away at the age of 79 on Friday, June 9th after a courageous battle with cancer.  Brigitte was born in Eastern Germany and came to Canada with the rest of her family in 1953 and made their home in Coaldale for two years before making Calgary their permanent home.  She attended the School of Lendringsen (in Germany), Montgomery JR.-SR. High School and finishing off her education at Mount Royal College.  Her first job was at the neighborhood Safeway, moving on to a restaurant supply company before being employed at the City of Calgary.

She met the love of her life “Alex” through an accidental meeting through one of her friends who had a crush on Alex.  Alex was really smitten with Brigitte and a courtship emerged.  Brigitte would travel with Alex on his bus routes just to spend time with him.  Alex popped the question and on August 25th, 1966, they were married and moved into the home Brigitte occupied until her last days.

Alex and Brigitte started a family.  Unbeknownst to Brigitte, she wasn’t just gaining weight and getting bigger, she was actually pregnant.  It didn’t matter how much she rode her bike and went for walks; the weight was not coming off until the middle of September of 1971 when she gave birth to their son Jason.

During her time with Alex, many get-togethers occurred at the Moreau residence including too many shenanigans to mention.

Brigitte loved her gardening.  Every spring she would get the greenhouse going and start the process for the year's plantings.  Red and white was the theme for the front flower beds, while all other colors went into the backyard.  She also enjoyed the “Plant Sale”, which her mother had stated “This is the last year” - this carried on for an astonishing 10 years.  There were many “Projects” with Alex, to which she responded with outward enthusiasm, but inside she was thinking “Here we go again”.  These projects included but were not limited to, the infamous smokehouse – which was concrete and bricks, the raised deck that you could land a helicopter on – made of concrete, the garage, complete with the engine hoist, and in 52 years has no cracks in the floor – again concrete , and finally the  greenhouse that has lasted for 50 years and will probably out last man kind.

Brigitte enjoyed traveling; she would travel to Vancouver, Edmonton, Shaunavon, and Shuswap to visit family, Japan as a chaperone for Jason’s band, Hawaii with her mother and sisters, and all over the United States with family and close friends.

Besides being a wife and mother, Brigitte continued to work for the City of Calgary until such time she needed to leave in 1987 to take care of Alex.

She joined the Calgary Bastarettes in 1990, where she held different positions such as Queen Bee, Treasurer, and received her lifetime membership in 2015.

After Alex’s passing in 2001, she needed to keep herself occupied and started her own cleaning business, the “Queen of Clean” until she fully retired and enjoyed her life to the fullest.

Brigitte had a void, and that was filled by a second chance at love, and it came with her special friend Stew.  Together, they shared companionship and many more laughs throughout their time together.  When not together, Stew would make a point to call Brigitte at 7:00 p.m. sharp, each night.

Brigitte was a fun and loving wife and mother.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Jason (Del).  She will also be mourned by her sisters; Doris (Bill), Eva (Cory), Christina (Howard), and Marion, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Brigitte was predeceased by her parents Karl and Johanna; her loving husband Alex, and her brother-in-law Don.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the healthcare members at Foothills Hospital Unit 42, the entire staff at Chinook Hospice, and the medical assistance of MAID.
