Sûri Wîyâ

February 6, 1984 -Calgary, Alberta

June 2, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear beloved mother, adopted mother, wife, daughter, sister, auntie – “nana babe”, niece, cousin, and friend, Marcia “Mama” Veronica Poucette “Sûri Wîyâ”, on Friday, June 2, 2023 at the age of 39 years.

Mama was a very kind, loving, caring, compassionate, humble, and respectful person. Mama was so proud of her becoming a mother, she loved her children dearly, she did her best to be a good mom to her beautiful children and her two precious grandchildren.

Mama was raised to honour, respect, and practice her ythka culture and language, to which she was a fluent speaker. She could often be found dancing; pow wow was one of her loves. Mama was an all-around dancer, she danced jingle, Fancey, but she had a passion for women’s traditional. She felt pride and strength when she took part in Men’s grass in Penticton B.C. She travelled to many pow wows throughout Canada and the US with her family, starting when she was a little girl.

Mama also had a love of horses; this is why her grandfather gave her traditional name “Sûri Wîyâ”. Mama spent a lot of time around her late father Mark, who was a professional ponychuck wagon driver. She learned to ride horses, and help her dad take care of them, as they travelled to many chuckwagon events throughout Alberta.

Mama was also a skilled bead worker; she, her mom and sisters would work together to make pow-wow regalia. Mama also looked forward to the Calgary Stampede as her late grandmother Beatrice Poucette and her late father Mark were Tee-Pee holders. Mama also looked forward to this family tradition and knew her part. She became and developed a mastery in meat cutting, dry meat making, she took part in many Stampede parades and contests, such as teepee, celebration, and dance.  She also attended the Jasper, AB summer hockey camp.
