Obituary of Sonia June Wadsworth

Sonia Wadsworth, beloved wife of Phil Wadsworth, passed away on Thursday, 8th June, at the age of 79 years.

Born in Northampton, UK, Sonia travelled the world. She was a nursing graduate of the London Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth and practiced nursing, including midwifery, for 40 plus years. Sonia was a Nursing Officer with the Royal Navy for five years, serving in Malta. For three years, she practiced midwifery in Vanuatu.

A devout Catholic, Sonia volunteered with several churches including Calgary’s St Bonaventure. Sonia was also a passionate photographer achieving the distinction of Associateship of the British Royal Photographic Society.

Sonia will be most remembered for her intelligence, her strong, loving personality, her sparkling eyes, and her quick wit.

Sonia enjoyed traveling. She and Phil met and married in Bahrain, 1981. Together, they traveled, lived, and worked around the world. In Europe and North America, Sonia and Phil flew light aircraft around the continents. Later, they toured North America by motorhome. Their most memorable vacation was to Mauritius in 1981. They moved to Canada in 2007 and lived in the wonderful community of Priddis Greens since 2011. Two adventurous souls exploring the world.

Sonia was predeceased by her parents, Eve and Reg Goad, and her dog, William.

Sonia was diagnosed with ALS, Motor Neuron Disease. Sadly, there is no known cause of, or cure for, ALS, which progressively deteriorates nerves connected to the muscular system. Sonia spent her last year at home with her husband Phil. They received considerable support from Elaine, Phil’s daughter, close friends here in Alberta, the UK and US, including Priddis Greens community neighbours, members of St Bonaventure Parish Church, and colleagues from her gym, Ladies Gymvmt. They are most grateful to the Alberta ALS Society, the AHS ALS Clinic at the South Health Campus and the AHS Home Care Team based in Black Diamond, together with Unity Home Care.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Visitation and Prayer Service at St. Bonaventure Catholic Parish Church (1600 Acadia Drive SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Parish Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at 12:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
