Obituary of Martha Avramenko

June 6, 1935 - Petlura, Manitoba

June 13, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Martha Avramenko of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

Martha was born in Petlura, MB on June 6, 1935. She eventually settled in Calgary, AB, where she married George Avramenko in 1958.

Martha enjoyed being active and loved nothing more than playing with her grandson Chase and his friends. She taught them how to play baseball and even demonstrated the proper technique on the monkey bars. When not playing with the kids she could often be found in the garden tending to her many beautiful flowers.

Martha’s most memorable vacation was when she went parasailing in the Mayan Riviera, Mexico at the young age of 78, where the operators were so impressed with her ability and bravery that they wanted to use her in their promotional material.  In her younger years there were many cherished road trips throughout Canada and the U.S. In her later years she travelled extensively with her daughter to many tropical locations, including Mexico, Bahama’s and Cuba as well as stops in Las Vegas and Florida.

Martha grew up on a farm in Petlura, MB, where she learned the value of hard work, leaving at the age of 14 to pursue a variety of occupations. She worked for many years waitressing with Four Brothers restaurant (eventually being joined by her daughter Gina). Later she spent time as an elder care worker as well as being a fantastic process server along with her husband George and daughter Gina.

She will be most remembered for her warm hospitality and her deep love of family. She was most happy when hosting visitors to her home, where her cooking skills were second to none… Ukrainian favourites in particular.

Martha is survived by her daughter Gina and son-in-law Larry Dyck of Bragg Creek, AB, and her grandson Chase Avramenko of Calgary, AB, whom she doted on like a true Baba.

Martha is also survived by one brother and three sisters, Walter Slobozian of Winnipeg, MB, Rose Nielson of Calgary, AB, Linda Kindret of Winnipeg, MB and Anne Benson of Winnipeg, MB, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Martha was predeceased by her husband George Avramenko; parents Nick and Mary Slobozian; Steve, Pete, Mike, Matt, Bill, John, Fred and Paul Slobozian; and sister Elsie Storozynsky .
