Carol Kuss

Obituary of Carol Mae Kuss

December 17, 1929 – June 25, 2023

Carol, beloved wife of George Kuss of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully with George by her side on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

Born Carol Mae Gibson in Blackie, AB, Carol grew up on the family farm and often went to school on horseback… which was handy during winter blizzards as the horse “knew the way home”. She moved to Calgary as a young woman and worked in the pharmacy of Marshall Drugs as well as a dental assistant at the City of Calgary.

She met the love of her life, George, at the racetrack at Stampede Park and they were inseparable. Two years later, in November of 1956, they were married. Together, they forged a life that was filled with friends, family, good times and laughter. She was a dedicated and loving wife and always made sure that “her George” was looked after.

Carol was a consummate hostess and loved entertaining. They hosted many a Stampede party, summer barbeques and Grey Cup parties. Carol wasn’t shy and would not hesitate to shush you if she couldn’t hear the play by play during the football game. She spoiled many a guest and relative with her roast beef dinners. She loved gardening and her flower garden was always spectacular. Carol also loved animals, and Mandy, the dachshund, lived a charmed life and was well loved and pampered. Guard, a black German Shepherd, kept her safe when George was away.

Carol enjoyed the horse races and, later in life, playing the lotto. She was an avid crib player and met daily with “the girls” for a few games and/or coffee. She enjoyed both summer and winter camping and loved her travels to Hawaii, Panama and Mexico. She and George would winter in Mesa, Arizona for 30 plus years. She made many close friends there and picked up the game of pool.

Carol knitted innumerable blankets for premature babies and donated them to the hospital. In their later years, Carol and George were frequent visitors of The Grey Eagle Casino where Carol became known as a very lucky VLT player. It was truly amazing how often she would win.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Mona and Mildred as well as her brothers, Lowell, Don and “Bus”.

Special thanks to all the staff at Age Care Glenmore who took such good care of Carol and who provided a great deal of comfort during her final days.
