Obituary of Jonathan Wayne Ritchie

We are sad to announce that Jon passed away on June 27th at the age of 34 years. Jon’s sweet smile and gentle soul enriched our lives profoundly.

Jon spent his early years in Devon, but for most of his life Jon called Calgary home. He had a photographer’s eye and a traveller’s spirit, visiting parts of Europe, Asia, the US, Mexico and Canada over the years, including several months in South America where he volunteered teaching English to school children. He taught himself Spanish and a smattering of Portuguese, and also how to play the piano. His musicianship was also expressed in the production of digital audio.

After a few years in the oil patch, Jon became a forestry technician, working in northern Alberta and BC.  Jon was most recently studying kinesiology at Red Deer Polytech, following his deep interest in the connection of body, mind and spirit.

Jon was a natural athlete, who played football and rugby in school but he mostly loved to run the trails and pathways for long kilometers with his headphones on. Jon poured himself wholeheartedly into everything he did, and most of all he was a kind and funny friend, son, brother, nephew, cousin, and grandson. Jon is survived by his parents Wayne and Karen, and his brother Joe and a large extended family of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He will be so sorely missed.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Ritchie’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
