Obituary of Marilyn June Olsen

February 28, 1936 - June 29, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn June Olsen (nee Hoegi) on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at the age of 87 years. Marilyn “Barney” was deeply loved and cherished by her children David (Dorothy) and Nancy Olsen; and four grandchildren whom she adored, Kali Olsen, Braeden Olsen, Sierra Inglis, and Ella Inglis.

As a single mother, Marilyn selflessly and steadfastly devoted her time, energy, and love toward the raising of her children; often sacrificing her own needs and comfort. Her devotion to her children’s pursuits made for busy days and many trips in her beloved Mustang. She was a parenting role model to be emulated. Barney’s love for her grandchildren was unwavering. She was supportive and present for their many endeavours. She was genuinely curious of their academic, social, and extracurricular daily activities; always peppering them with questions about their goings on. She was very proud of each of them and loved them dearly.

Her home in Thorncliffe, where she resided for over 60 years, was a gathering place for all souls - neighbours, friends, children, grandchildren, and dogs. Everyone was welcome in her home. She hosted many endearing gatherings large and small within her home and around her dinner table. She was a gracious, generous, and fun hostess to all.

Marilyn’s 30+ year career with Amoco saw her move into various positions - from key punch operator to curator of Amoco’s multi-million-dollar artwork collection. She loved this job. More importantly, the friendships she made during these Amoco days were highly cherished and fondly reminisced over - Eaton’s surprise sales, lunches, and general tom foolery.

Marilyn also made many good friends at the Calgary Winter Club through her children’s pursuits in figure skating and badminton, as well through as her own involvement with curling, tennis, and bridge. With the many friends she made throughout her life, she deeply enjoyed travelling to Malaysia, Singapore, Mexico, and Las Vegas, and was a welcome addition to her daughter’s and granddaughters’ junkets to Hawaii, Mexico, New York, and Arizona.

Marilyn’s character was a unique combination of honesty, stubbornness, independence, integrity, and unassuming hilarity. Her legendary “That’s ridiculous!” will live on in our hearts.

We will miss her deeply.

As per Marilyn’s wishes a private family service will be held. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed at www.MHFH.com.
