Obituary of Philip Uniat
October 1, 1919 - Vegreville, Alberta
July 9, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
Philip Uniat passed away peacefully at Carewest Royal Park in Calgary, Alberta on July 9, 2023, at 103 years of age. Philip was born to Michael and Catherine Uniat on October 1, 1919, at his parents' homestead north of Innisfree, Alberta. He married Olga (nee Laniuk) on July 15, 1951, and started his teaching career in Kitscoty, Alberta, and later moved to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, where he retired as the Vice Principal of Fort Saskatchewan High School in 1982.
During his teaching days, Philip was an avid golfer and curler, but he always had time to find solutions to fixing things around the home, which was dubbed "the white house" by the family. In 1993, Philip and Olga re-located to a smaller home in Calgary to be closer to their children, where they lived an active life until his late 90's. He always wanted to live to be 100, and he thoroughly enjoyed that milestone.
Philip was predeceased by his parents, his eight brothers and two sisters and his daughter-in-law, Joy Uniat. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Olga; children, Wayne (Lois) of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Joan (Brian) Hughson of Calgary, and Alan Uniat of West Kelowna, British Columbia; three grandchildren, Philip (Leah) Hughson, Patrick (Charmaine Ironside) Hughson and Mark (Janessa) Uniat, all of Calgary, as well as eight great grandchildren, ranging in age from one to eight years old.
Philip - husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather - was a steadfast presence throughout our lives. We will love and remember him always. There will be a private family memorial for Philip at a later date.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Carewest Royal Park, where Philip has resided for the last three years.
In living memory of Philip Uniat, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
