Condolences
I taught with John from 2002-2013. I found him to be very knowledgeable and I know he was an excellent teacher. More importantly he was a kind and caring man. I came to ask for his assistance on many occasions and he was always willing to help me out, always with a smile and an even an interesting story. He took his time to find a resolution to whatever issue I brought to him. I know the Saint Francis community will miss him and I pray that he is resting in peace.
Mr. Schwengler was my science teacher in Grade 9, and he was one of my all time favourite teachers. I didn’t know about his love for comics. (That could be why he never gave me any grief for drawing comics in class!) God bless you, Mr. Schwengler.
I was new to SFHS as a staff member. Leaving at the end of the day, John and I shared a hello, a laugh, how are you or have a great weekend. God bless. RIP
Mr. John Schwengler was not only one of my favourite teachers in both junior high and high school, but a neighbour (with his mum) when I growing up. He was a thoughtful teacher and always had a friendly word and smile. After becoming a teacher myself, he was ready with the wise words and a new perspective whenever I saw him walking his dog. Thoughts and prayers to his family. Rest in peace, Mr. Schwengler.
The S corridor at St. Francis will never be the same…it was John’s world. In S202 he welcomed a daily barrage of students and teachers to an oasis where creativity and calmness could overcome the obstacles. John was a master teacher in the truest sense of the description. He just had a way of dealing with students that showed he really cared about them as people. They were never just his ‘daily job.’ He knew the backstories of those who needed extra assistance or guidance, and put in the hours it took to keep them thriving. I shared a classroom with him one memorable semester, and marveled at his ability to captivate his somewhat unruly audience with humor and kindness. He also used the same skills to keep the adults in the building sane, especially on those days when technical problems threatened to derail that ‘I pushed the button but nothing happened’ lesson!
John was the man of a million stories on just about every subject under the sun. You name it…there was a tale he could tell. You could spend hours listening to him…and oftentimes did! I will deeply miss his discussions on British television, corridor politics and “...there’s treats in the file cabinet drawers.” My thoughts and prayers are with his family. God bless, John…thanks for being a wonderful friend.
A true legend at St. Helena in the 90's. I will never forget his passion for teaching science and the periodic table of elements. Oh, how we dreaded having to memorize that thing for Mr. S's class! Rest in Peace, Mr. Schwengler.
John always helped me with so many questions I had at work, he especially helped me with technology.
He new so much about everything, cooking, baking, comics, anything I needed to know I could ask John

I went to St Helena in 1972-1973, John was one grade behide me, Then in I worked part time with John at all west supermarket
on hunterview dr ,in huntington hills in 1975, for a short time. He was smarter than the supervisors running the place.
I was a pleasure working with him and seeing him in junior high school
John was my science practicum teacher at St, Helena’s 26 years ago. His strong belief in my teaching abilities gave me the confidence to be sure footed in my delivery of the curriculum and my interactions with students. He always wore a smile and was quick to help those in need of some tech help- his phone was always ringing with someone who needed him to get them out of a bind, and he was gracious with his assistance. I’m a better teacher for having crossed paths with him at such a crucial time.
Our deepest condolences to John's family and friends. John was a supportive colleague who always put his students first. He enjoyed working on any initiatives that supported student learning, always with good humour and encouragement. He was a mentor to new teachers and an inspiration for seasoned teachers. His work on Science committees and leading school programs meant his influence touched students and teachers throughout the District. We appreciated his leadership and most importantly, his friendship.
Rest peacefully, John. You will be missed.

Mr. Schwengler was my grade 9 homeroom and Science teacher at St. Helena. He was such an intelligent man and always had such great stories to share during our lessons. He was genuine , supportive and encouraging, always taking the time to chat. You will be missed and we appreciated you. Much love and comfort to his family and friends.
For 18 years, we stood side by side, at St. Francis HS, sharing not only the responsibilities of teaching but also the joys and challenges of life. Your warmth and genuine kindness illuminated every room you entered, and your compassion touched the lives of countless students and colleagues alike.
Whenever a computer glitched or technology posed a challenge, your expertise was the guiding light that led us through the maze of complexities. Your patience in explaining and helping others with their computer problems was a testament to the remarkable person you were.
But beyond your technical skills, it was your friendship that truly defined you. You were always there with a listening ear, ready to offer support and encouragement during tough times. Your genuine smile and infectious laughter brightened our darkest days, reminding us that life was worth cherishing, even in the face of adversity.
Rest in peace John, you were a dear friend and colleague. Your presence is sorely missed, but your impact will never fade.
