Obituary of Harold Peter Krause
October 8, 1938 – Marienheim, Ukraine
July 16, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
Harold Krause of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at the age of 84.
Harold was born in Marienheim, Ukraine, and was there during the war. To escape the conflict, the Krause family along with John Froehlich came to Canada May 5, 1950, moved to Saskatchewan to farm, and then eventually settled in Camrose, AB in 1952. Harold grew up there, went to school and helped build the family home.
He attended Alberta College to study bookkeeping, and after graduating, taught the course for a year before being hired by National Cash Registers (NCR). It wasn’t long before Harold’s dedication, attention to detail and work ethic earned him the trust and respect of the company and the many colleagues he worked with, eventually becoming the District Manager for Western Canada in a distinguished 33-year career.
It was also at NCR where Harold met Linda (arguably his best merger). They were married on March 9, 1968, started their life and family together in Edmonton, and soon moved to Calgary. His life was filled with many wonderful times teaching the kids to golf, coaching their little league baseball teams, Grey Cup parties, Backyard BBQs, being Mr. Fix-it around the house, and his Sunday morning ritual of ‘cheesy egg breakfasts’ with Heintje playing on the stereo.
Harold was an accomplished golfer, and greatly enjoyed the yearly May Long weekend Jasper golf trips with his lifelong friends Sandy, Keith, and Dale, and upon Sandy’s passing, Linda joined the foursome to continue the tradition that lasted over 50 years. Family road trips were plentiful, with many trips to Camrose to visit the grandparents, Saskatchewan to visit the Froehlichs, excursions to Spokane, San Diego, Seattle, Jasper, the BC interior, and of course Disneyland with the kids.
After AT&T purchased NCR, Harold was offered positions in other cities but took the retirement package in 1994 to stay in Calgary, close to friends and family. But not one to sit idle for long he started driving school buses for Southland Transportation, where he greatly enjoyed taking the Elementary kids to school, and in summers, a group of kids from Germany on mountain camping trips.
Harold will be most remembered for his quiet compassion, integrity, work ethic, his love for Linda, his sons, and granddaughters, as well as his unwavering commitment to his friends, family, and extended family.
The family would like to thank the caring nursing staff and residents at the Midnapore AgeCare facility, Dr. Ward, as well as our gratitude to his wonderful neighbours and many friends for their friendship and support throughout the years.
Harold is survived by his wife Linda, sons, Lyle and David; daughters-in-law, Meghan and Stéphanie; grandchildren, Penelope and Léa; sister Selma Gartner, and brother-in-law John Gartner. He was predeceased by his parents Emil and Erna Krause and John Froehlich.
