William Rutledge

Obituary of William Carlton Rutledge

November 1, 1946 – Shelburne, Ontario

July 22, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

In memory of William (Bill) Carlton Rutledge who passed away in the loving setting of The Salvation Army Agapé Hospice in Calgary, Alberta, and in the loving company of his niece Laura and his sister Carol.

Bill was born in Shelburne, Ontario on November 1, 1946, to Marion Ruth (Stanley) and William Henry Rutledge.

Bill was a (highway) trailer mechanic by trade, but he worked many jobs in many places throughout North America, from a brickworks in Brampton to a mine in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, to installing railings in Southern California, to being a brakeman on the CN line out of Nakina in Northwestern Ontario. He was of the mind that you found a place where you wanted to be and then found something to do there. As a result, he spent portions of his life in Florida, Vancouver, Shelburne, and Toronto, as well as the other destinations noted, moving to Calgary one and a half years ago to be closer to his family.

Over the years, Bill had acquired a real understanding of modern history through voraciously following news and current events through newspapers, and then news channels, and as a result was extremely well-informed on Canadian and international events.

He had the uncanny ability to sum up world events as well as ordinary life situations into deadly-accurate quips that we eagerly anticipated and treasured.

Bill leaves to join his parents and his caring aunts, Alice and Helen Rutledge, and Margaret (Rutledge) Bond. He leaves to mourn his sister and brother-in-law Carol Jane (Rutledge) and Don Mawdsley, and their children, Laura (Mawdsley) Millar and David Mawdsley of Calgary, Alberta, and Shannon (Mawdsley) Siedl of Vernon, British Columbia.

As Bill wished, there will be no service and his family plans to gather to toast him and celebrate his interesting life.

In living memory of Bill Rutledge, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.
