Obituary of Barbara Anne Potyok

March 21, 1940 - Welland, Ontario

July 24, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Barbara Potyok (nee Walters), of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2023 at the age of 83 years.

Barbara was born in Welland, Ontario, Canada on March 21, 1940.

She graduated from Hamilton Teachers College in 1961 and over the years she had rewarding careers as a teacher, real estate agent, hotel, and apartment manager. She married Ron Potyok in 1960 and moved with him and three children to Ft Smith NT in 1968 and eventually to Calgary in 1971. Mostly though, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Barbara's main passion was as the number 1 fan of her kids and grandchildren in any activity they were participating in. She loved watching her sons and grandsons play hockey and baseball, and her daughter’s days as a competitive swimmer.

Barbara felt blessed to be able to travel to Australia and The Philippines later in life, following her sons exploits around the world.

She also loved games nights with her children and grandchildren. Nothing got her going like a rousing game of Sticks.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Victoria and her partner Alvin Mckay of Calgary; her two sons, Christopher and his wife Estrellita (Star) of Calgary, and Gregory and his wife Roberta (Bobbi) of Ft. Saskatchewan; grandchildren, James, Carolyn, Stephen, Carly, Jasper, Lynnell, Luke, Lauren, Shaelee, Skye, Kashtin and Jullien ; and numerous great-grandchildren. Barbara is also survived by her loving brother Peter Walters from Victoria BC.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband Ronald, and her sister Kathleen.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Friday, July 28, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Barbara’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
