Obituary of Eldon Roy Lanes

March 25, 1937 – Canwood, Saskatchewan

July 28, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Eldon Roy Lanes peacefully left his earthly body on Friday, July 28, 2023 with his wife and children by his side. After a steady decline due to dementia and other complications, his departure has brought comfort to his loved ones.

Eldon was born in Canwood, SK to Elsie and Anton Lanes on March 25, 1937. He was the third of four sons. He attended Dry Creek School and always shared memories with his grandchildren of his time there.

In 1961, he married his love Theresa Pevach and they were blessed with two children, Cheryl and Kevin.

He was a lifelong salesman, from farm equipment to a 20-year career as general manager of Ens Toyota in Saskatoon, as well as ownership in two Toyota dealerships in Edmonton. This was always reflected in his wardrobe, as he was known for his suit-and-tie style, all the way down to his Florsheim shoes, and always wearing a hat. Even during his brief stay in assisted living, he preferred to wear a dress shirt, pants, and signature hat.

His two granddaughters fondly remember his days on the acreage in Saskatoon where he turned his thoroughbred horse hobby into a lifestyle. He bred, raised, and raced some incredible horses earning numerous accolades including the winner of the Rainbow of Roses, a sale topper at an auction, as well as many of his horses winning Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Association (SK division) Filly and Colt of the year.

His family enticed his move to Alberta, and he settled in Edmonton in 1995. In 2021 they made the big move to Calgary to be closer to his great-grandchildren. He was able to spend irreplaceable time with them, often being called GG Eldon.

Eldon is remembered by his wife of 61 years, Theresa; daughter Cheryl (Blaine); and son Kevin (Marylynn and her son Jacob); Cheryl’s daughters, Brittany (Jason) Bunch and her children; and Stephanie (Corey) Hornick and her sons; and countless extended family members.
