Bill Ryan

Obituary of Bill Ryan

March 21, 1941 - St. Joseph's, Newfoundland

July 29, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Together with friends and family we both mourn the loss of and celebrate the life of Bill Ryan. His was a life that was lived as a loving husband for fifty-seven years to his wife, Linda, a father of integrity to his daughter, Jennifer, a mentor to his son-in-law, Jack Latta, and a committed grandfather to his grandchildren Cori and Alex Latta.

Born and raised in a large family in St. Joseph's NFLD, Bill moved to Sudbury in 1966 with his new wife, Linda, to begin his career as a shift boss at INCO. He became a father both to his daughter, Jennifer, and his son, Corey, in 1971. When tragedy struck in 1983 with the death of his son, Corey, due to an impaired driving collision, Bill helped found the first anti-drinking & driving campaign in Northern Ontario--People to Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (PRIDE). As Vice[1]President of this campaign along with his wife, President, and a team of committed volunteers, Bill helped pave the way to creating awareness and enforcing laws against impaired driving. With the passing decades Bill kept his son, Corey, close to his heart and never stopped missing him.

Bill became a grandfather when his grandchildren Cori and Alex were born in 1995 and 1997. After Jennifer, her husband Jack and their children moved to Calgary, AB, Bill spent his retirement years flying to Calgary several times a year to spend time with his beloved grandchildren during all their life stages. In 2020 Bill and Linda settled in Calgary when Bill decided he wanted to spend his remaining years close to family.

He will always be remembered for his indomitable spirit, his sense of adventure, his generosity and ever ready helping hand. Bill was blessed to have lived life to the fullest down to his last day passing peacefully in his sleep in his home after a dinner and visit with much loved friends.
