Obituary of Janet Kathleen Baldwin

Janet Kathleen Baldwin

August 14, 1941 – July 29, 2023

Janet Kathleen Baldwin (née Agnew) died peacefully on July 29, 2023, at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary. Cause of death was viral/bacteriological pneumonia.

With her at the end were husband (of 55 years) Barry, son Alexander James and daughter Martha Kathleen.

Janet was born on August 14, 1941, at Ancaster, Ontario, to Kathleen Agnew (née McConnell) and Ellis Alexander Agnew. She graduated BA from McMaster University, MA from Queens, and also studied at the University of New Brunswick and University of Toronto.

After a summer’s stint with the Canadian Air Force in Labrador, she taught English for a year in Sweden for the University of Uppsala. In 1967, she came to the University of Calgary as Assistant Professor of English, where she was instrumental in setting up the first programme in Canadian Literature.

Amongst many other interests and passions (expert cook, ditto card player, etc.), she remained an ardent fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Hamilton Tiger Cats.

At her wish, there will be no formal funeral. She will be quietly cremated at the funeral home of McInnis & Holloway, to whom our best thanks are due for all their kind assistance.

The family wish to express their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses and social workers at the Rockyview Hospital for their boundless kindness. The doctors worked unceasingly to try and keep Janet alive, and the nurses were unflagging in their care of her. Calgarians are fortunate to have such people here to help them in times of medical trouble.

In living memory of Janet Baldwin, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
