Mildred Maubach

Obituary of Mildred Ethel Maubach

December 4, 1925 – Watertown, New York

July 30, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Mildred “Millie” Ethel Maubach (nee Deline) passed away peacefully in Calgary on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the age of 97 years.

Millie was born on December 4, 1925, in Watertown, NY, and moved as a child to Kingston, ON, where she grew up with her eight siblings. On June 1, 1948, she married Joseph Edward Maubach, and they raised their children, Marika and Stephen, in Otterburn Park, QC, until 1966, when they moved to Ottawa. Joe passed away two years later, and Millie continued to live in Ottawa until 1997 when she moved to Calgary to be closer to Marika and Steve.

After Joe’s passing, Millie lovingly raised Marika and Steve on her own, guiding them into adulthood and was always a big part of their lives. Family was first in Millie’s world, and she extended her love to son-in-law Gary Fitzgerald and daughter-in-law Anita Pieterse. She was the best “Nanny” to Joanna Ritchie (nee Fitzgerald) and Quinn Maubach and to Joanna’s husband Robert Ritchie. Millie was overjoyed to become a great-grandmother, “GG”, to Ava and Ryan Ritchie.

Over her 97 years, Millie touched the lives of many people, everywhere she went, through her warmth, sense of humour, and acts of kindness, large and small. She loved to feed people and was a wonderful cook and baker – everything she made was delicious, we all “pinned back our ears and dug in!”, and you would likely leave her home with a bag full of Millie-made treats for more comfort food later.

Millie was proudly independent, living on her own until she moved to Carewest Colonel Belcher in 2019. She was an avid reader of murder mysteries, loved to play cards, Scrabble, and board games, and crosswords were part of her daily life. She leaves behind many warm memories – and favourite family recipes – for us to cherish.

Millie will be deeply missed by her surviving family, Marika and Gary Fitzgerald, Steve Maubach and Anita Pieterse, Joanna, Bob, Ava and Ryan Ritchie, and Quinn Maubach. She is also lovingly remembered by her nieces Joanne and Brenda Kaye.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Vivian Ewa and the entire team at Carewest Colonel Belcher. Your support and personal kindness – doing laundry and styling her hair, taking time to visit, and the hugs – enriched Millie’s life during her time in your excellent care.

Thanks as well to the medical team on Unit 42 at the Foothills Medical Center, in particular to nurses Lindsay and Shirley, for your kind, compassionate, and respectful care in her last days.

A Gathering will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Heritage, 1708 16 Avenue NW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. Condolences and memories can also be shared and viewed here.
