Obituary of Earle Lloyd Allen
April 28, 1929 - Dodsland, Saskatchewan
July 30, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
It is with grateful hearts that we share the news of our father’s peaceful death on Sunday afternoon. Earle enjoyed a very full life of 94 years, and we trust he is now in eternity with Jesus and those who have gone before him.
He was also born on a Sunday, to loving parents Aleta Minota (Cochrane) Allen and John Fields Allen. Earle was predeceased by his devoted wife of 69 years, Laurette Odelie (Courchene) Allen, and his brother, Leonard John Allen. He is survived by his two children, Lori Aleta Bazin (Denis) and Douglas John Allen (Gina); and he was blessed with four grandsons, Christopher and Alex Bazin, and Luke and Sean Allen.
Earle was born in Dodsland, SK. He moved to Kerrobert in 1935 with his mother and younger brother, after the untimely death of his father. Growing up during the Depression in a single parent home was extremely challenging. Earle often looked back with appreciation for all the support they received from family and friends. He moved from Kerrobert to Calgary in 1948 and was married in Central United Church in 1950. He and Laurette bought their first home in 1955 and remained in the same house for their entire lives.
Earle began his career with Calgary Power in 1949. He also became involved in the Credit Union Movement and quickly moved from the local to the provincial level, becoming the first President of the Credit Union Federation of Alberta. Later he founded and was the first President of NACCU (National Association of Cooperative Credit Unions). Earle worked his way through the ranks of Calgary Power, later TransAlta Utilities, and retired in 1987 after 38 years’ service. He remained active with the Credit Union and various other organizations like the CBTA (Canadian Business Travel Association). He travelled extensively while Laurette kept the home fires burning.
Although very career oriented, Earle always said that family was most important to him. He was proud of both of his children, and then his grandchildren, and thankful for the trials and triumphs along the way. There’s no doubt that Earle enjoyed life. He loved to have fun with family and friends, waltz around the dance floor, raise a glass or two, and join in the chorus.
Throughout his life, Earle also remained dedicated to his faith. He and Laurette joined Central United Church in 1950 and served faithfully for the rest of their days. Earle became Chairman of the Board of Elders in 1970 and continued to serve for multiple decades in various church leadership roles. He was the last remaining Lifetime Elder.
He will be missed by all who knew him, and we rest assured that we will meet again.
