Obituary of Miloš Gruber

February 17, 1933 – Czechoslovakia

August 1, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Miloš passed on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, surrounded by his family, leaving behind his loving wife Jindra, daughter Jana, adult grandchildren, Joanna and David, and his infant great-grandson Blake. Miloš was predeceased by his sister Zděnka.

Miloš was a lifelong entrepreneur, constantly reviewing opportunities and confidently taking calculated risks.  Following his Business Academy training in Czechoslovakia Miloš found an interest in business planning and construction. He immigrated to Canada in 1969 and his entrepreneurial spirit took hold in Calgary where he was the owner of ten businesses over the years. The notable of which were Aico Developments where he built 300 homes in Alberta and BC, and BOLD Signs which he ran with his longtime business partner Vic Lowen. Even in retirement Miloš continued pursuing ideas, successfully launching Phantom Screens in Czech Republic and Eko-Flood in Calgary.

Miloš’ dedication extended to his personal life where his strong will, cheerful curiosity, and optimism fueled his interest in people, appreciation of travel, languages, and love for his family.  He was clever and skilled, and his curiosity led him to develop meaningful connections with those he encountered. With quiet enthusiasm Miloš remained committed to lifelong learning, maintaining a savviness with technology, and learning new skills.  He loved to create a robust plan in advance of taking action, find creative solutions, tinker and build, and could often be found researching and innovating. Devoted to his wife, he helped to rebuild her ancestral home where they then spent their summers enjoying the company of family and friends.

He was loved.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the Rockyview Hospital, Surgery Unit 83, for the care they gave to Miloš.

A Celebration of Miloš’ Life will be held at the Austrian-Canadian Cultural Centre (3112 11 St NE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 17, 2023. We will honour him with a light serving of his favourite lunch at 1:30 p.m. followed by a short ceremony at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to support Ukrainian refugees.
