Obituary of Doris Viola Bowen

February 15, 1934 - Dundas, Prince Edward Island

August 3, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Viola Jenkins announces her passing at Southwood Care Centre in Calgary, AB on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the age of 89.

Doris was born in Dundas, P.E.I. on February 15, 1934, to Frederick Lloyd Jenkins and Katherine (Jones) Jenkins and was a member of a large farming family that included several sisters and brothers. She was predeceased by siblings, Hazel Raynor (Ralph), Cecil (Marion), Bennett (Gail), Evelyn, Alice (Vincent), Preston (Eileen) and infant sister Mary Elizabeth. Doris is survived by sisters, Bea Humphry (Andy) and Pauline.

Doris became a registered nurse in 1955 and had a short nursing career before meeting her soulmate, Don Bowen and moving west to Calgary to become a beloved mother to Frederick (Marie), Robert, Wayne (Heather) and Irene (Ryan). Don predeceased Doris, but the two of them were also proud and active grandparents to ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren (who affectionately called her Grandma or Nana).

Doris will be remembered for the deep love of her family and her spiritual quest to which she focused her energies once her children left home. She was both an astrologer and an author, working towards understanding and sharing esoteric knowledge of the universe. She will also be remembered as an exceptional cribbage player who won her fair share of games.

A Celebration of Doris’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
