Obituary of The Hon. Frederick "Fred" A. Stewart, QC

July 8, 1934 – Maple Creek, Saskatchewan

August 11, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that the family of Fred Stewart announces his peaceful passing in Calgary, AB, on August 11, 2023, at the age of 89 years after a long struggle with dementia.

Fred was born in Maple Creek, SK, to John and Frances Stewart on July 8, 1934.

Fred went to the University of Saskatchewan where he earned his B.Comm in 1955. He would later go on to further his education at the University of Toronto Law School earning an LL.B in 1965.

His careers in law and politics spanned many years. In 1969 he co-founded a legal practice in Calgary, AB.  In 1986 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta representing Calgary North Hill for two terms.

In his political life he was most satisfied with his work chairing the Steering Committee for the privatization of Alberta Government Telephones to Telus, and his role in the creation of Nose Hill Park.  Other roles included Chair of the Calgary MLA Caucus, Government House Leader, member of the Priorities Committee and Treasury Board, and Minister of Technology, Research & Telecommunications.

Fred was a caring, kind, and generous person with a tremendous love for people, especially his grandchildren. Time spent with Grandpa included travel to Europe, walks in the mountains, overnights at the Zoo, evenings out at restaurants and attending musical performances with his granddaughter, who shares the same birth date. Grandpa was always fun with lots of good laughter and hijinks.

Fred is survived by his son Douglas Stewart (Rose Marie), three grandchildren who will dearly miss their Grandpa. Alyssa (Brandon), Andrew, and Alexander. He is also survived by niece Frances Stewart, and nephews Robert (Margaret) Stewart, Ian (Karen) Stewart, and Reagan (Charlotte) Mackie. Fred is predeceased by his son Gordon Stewart, and his brother Donald Stewart.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Agecare Walden for the care, and comfort they provided Fred over the years.

A celebration of life will be scheduled for a later date. The family requests no flowers, but an acknowledgement of Fred through a charity of your choice.
