Obituary of Gladys Pulak (nee Luschyk)

June 26, 1932 – Sonningdale, Saskatchewan

August 9, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with broken hearts that we sadly announce the passing of Gladys Joyce (Luschyk) Pulak, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and cherished friend. Early in the morning of August 9th, 2023, at the age of 91, Gladys was called home to be with our heavenly father. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and unwavering commitment to her family and community.

On June 26, 1932, Gladys was born near Sonningdale, SK, to her parents, Philip & Katie Luschyk. Her upbringing in a small farming community instilled in her a strong foundation of values that would guide her throughout her life's journey. As the oldest daughter, she naturally embraced a caregiver role and was passionate about helping her family in any way she could. She had a strong relationship with her two older brothers (Nick and Jack) and younger sister (Eva). She was enthusiastic about learning new skills that eventually became her life passions, such as cooking, baking, sewing, and gardening. When she left the farm, she relocated to Saskatoon and enjoyed full time employment as a button maker at Waldman and Paul, Clothing Manufacture, waitressing at a café near the hockey arena, and seamstress with Crest Craft making high quality crests and patches.

Gladys met her future husband, Robert (Bob) Pulak and they were married on September 10, 1955. As they started their family, they travelled from Saskatoon to Ottawa and eventually settled in Calgary. Their marriage was blessed with the joy of three children, Cindy, born in 1957, Valerie in 1962, and Greg in 1963. As her children got older, Gladys returned to the workforce part-time at Woodward’s in the fabric department. She also loved to volunteer (e.g., Girl Guide leader, Christian bookstore, pastoral care with a hospital, and in an elementary school).

Gladys was a devout Christian whose spirituality was at the core of her being. She found solace, strength, and purpose in her faith, which she shared with her family and community. It was important for her to ensure her children and grandchildren knew about God’s love for them. In addition to her spiritual strength, Gladys possessed a green thumb and a talent for gardening that was truly unmatched. She poured her heart into tending to her garden and nurturing flowers and other plants and trees, which flourished under her care. Her garden was a testament to her patience, love, and dedication. She loved and cared for the birds, butterflies, and bees that visited. Gladys is also remembered for her exceptional cooking and baking. Her home was a regular place of comfort and care, where loved ones would gather to create cherished memories. She treasured having the opportunity to host family gatherings and entertain regular company. She loved spending time with her family, friends, and church community. She enjoyed passing her knowledge down to her children and grandchildren by teaching them how to cook family recipes (e.g., cabbage rolls, varenyky), nurture plants, and sew. She taught her family to sit and appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature.

After the passing of her beloved husband, Gladys continued to live independently in her Calgary home, surrounded by the love and support of her family and caregiver community. Her resilience and determination were a testament to her strong character and unwavering spirit. We would like to thank her caregivers, Michelle Petersen, Julie Macey, and Geraldine Lee, who helped make the last few years positive and full of so many fond memories. Gladys leaves behind a legacy of love and family devotion. She is survived by her daughters, Cindy (Tim) Haley and Valerie Pulak-Maillet, her son Greg (Martha) Pulak, and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kyle, Kelsey, and Taryn Haley; Robbie and Mathew Maillet; Melanie, Michelle, and Michael Pulak; as well as great-grandchildren Lexine, Jayden, Levi, Kohl, and Ciena.

Gladys was a gracious and cheerful matriarch of her family. Her legacy will continue to inspire and touch the lives of those fortunate enough to have known her. As we bid farewell to a remarkable woman, let us celebrate the memories that will forever keep her alive in our hearts.

Those who wish to pay their respects may do so at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB T2J 3B3) on Monday, August 21, 2023, with a viewing at 10:00AM and Funeral Mass at 11:00AM with reception to follow.
