Obituary of Cesar Ng 黃英傑

December 9, 1936 – Iloilo, Philippines

September 10, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Cesar Ng passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife Cynthia and his four grown children lovingly at his side on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the age of 86 years.

Born in Iloilo, Philippines, on December 9, 1936, Cesar attended Mapua University and Far Eastern University where he earned a degree in architecture. Starting out in his career, he worked in advertising where he met the love of his life Cynthia Go. They married in 1967 and started a family. In 1976, Cesar, Cynthia, and their four young children immigrated to Calgary.

A new country brought a new career. He worked for Petro-Canada as a draftsman, and later, for Nexen. But constant through all the change was a love of family, friends, and community. Through his work and other social endeavours, he made life-long friends, raised his children, and supported and helped anchor a large and growing extended family.

Cesar possessed the soul of an artist: He painted, took award-winning photos, and painstakingly documented the accomplishments of his loved ones through cameras and camcorders. Cesar shared his passions by encouraging a love of the arts and humanities in his eight grandchildren. He was often seen and heard holding court on Chinese and Asian history and current affairs, especially for his grandchildren. At his heart, Cesar was a humble, loyal, and generous man, who offered many others a kind word and helping hand, but never sought the spotlight or curried favours in return. People who Cesar befriended remained friends for life despite the strains of time and distance.

Cesar was the ultimate family man. His love and devotion never wavered as he sacrificed and scrimped to support those he loved. As “Lolo" to eight energetic grandchildren, there was little rest or relaxation for Cesar in retirement. He spent much of his latter years attending birthday parties, baptisms, recitals, and graduations, not to mention countless hockey, soccer, football, volleyball, skiing, gymnastics, and cheer events. His pride in them shone with every photo and video he took and displayed.

Cesar is survived by Cynthia, his loving wife of 55 years; daughters Yvette Ng (Bill) and Yvonne Hendry (David); sons Chris Ng (Nicky) and Lindsey Ng (Michelle); eight grandchildren whom he deeply cared for - Sarah, Ben, Emily, James, Brendan, Bridget, Chloe, and Abby; sisters-in-law, Vicky Kam (Tony) and Jennette Cheng (James); brother-in-law, Ernest Gococo (Edna); and his half-brother, Jose Jr. Ng (Nelly). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends in Canada and in the Philippines.

Cesar will be dearly missed but his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of all those whose lives he touched.
