Obituary of James Edward Balfe
February 24, 1947 – Newport, Wales
August 21, 2023 – Bragg Creek, Alberta
The family of James Edward Patrick Balfe announces the passing of their beloved father, brother, granddad, uncle, and friend on Monday, August 21, 2023. Jim was born on February 24, 1947, as the oldest son of Pauline and James Balfe, in Newport, Wales, UK.
In 1969 Jim married Christina Elizabeth Pearce an RN, and they settled in Cwmbran, Wales. Immigrating to Canada in 1982, Jim continued his path as an Instrumentation Technologist, leading him to a successful and fulfilling career as a design engineer in the oil and gas industry.
Jim enjoyed everything outdoors. Camping in his trailer, fishing, and going for long drives with no destination necessary. His daughters and grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He is survived by his daughters, Carrie Knievel (Ryan Knievel) and Hannah Cavanagh (Reid Cavanagh); as well as his granddaughters, Abigail and Chloe Knievel. He is also survived by his sister Ann Lowe (Joe Lowe), and brother Patrick Balfe. Sadly, he was predeceased by his wife Christina, and grandson Jacob Knievel.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Mr. Balfe’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with James’ family here.
