Obituary of Nicola Piattelli
May 19, 1939 – Francavilla al Mare, Italy
August 24, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nicola "Nick" Piattelli, beloved husband of Vittoria Piattelli of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the age of 84 years. Nicola was born in Francavilla al Mare, Abruzzo, Italy on May 19, 1939. He immigrated to Canada in 1958 with the help of his brother Alberto where they spent two years in Revelstoke, BC. Nick arrived on a Friday, and started his first job on Monday, where he worked as a lumberjack. Nick then ventured off and moved to Calgary, AB, in 1960.
Nick met his wife Vittoria in February 1963, where they later married in September 1963. They started their family in 1965 with their first born, Tony. Their quest for a daughter was granted with three more sons, Frank, Mario, and Paul. Nick’s family continued to grow and blossom over the years, and he was blessed with nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Nick pursued his dream of working in a suit as he spent thirty-five years working at the Hudson Bay. He started his career at the Bay in the cafeteria where he learned to speak English. Nick later moved to the shoe department, then shifted to a supervisor role, and opened Market Mall. While he pursued his career at the Bay, Nick and his brother-in-law, Raimondo Ferraro worked many years together working a second job to support their families. Throughout Nick’s years of working, he also enjoyed reupholstering furniture. Nick and his brother-in-law spent many years cleaning offices and cleaning the Calgary zoo’s cafeteria, and tea house. Nick and Raimondo also collaborated, and owned rental properties throughout the city.
Nick continued his journey at the Bay until he retired at the age of fifty-five. Before Nick retired from the Bay, he started New Way Homes with his two oldest sons, until he was seventy years of age, when he fully retired.
In Nick’s early years of being in Calgary, AB, he participated in the Abbruzzese Club. Some of the things Nick loved were spending time in his garden and in his greenhouse, BBQing, going to Dairy Queen with his grandkids and in particular, getting a banana split. In addition, Nick loved walking at the mall with friends, spending time with family, and making home-made tomato sauce, sausage, and olives. Drinking espresso, telling stories, and challenging everyone to a game of cards.
Nick was particularly proud of his career, and his family, and had a passion for helping the loved ones in his life.
Nick spent some of his free time visiting multiple warm destinations, but his most memorable vacation was celebrating his fiftieth anniversary in Hawaii, with his family.
Left to mourn is his wife of fifty-nine years Vittoria, four sons, Tony (Susie), Frank (Oralie), Mario (Louise), Paul (Lori); Grandchildren TJ (Lacey), Kristina (Riley), Nick (Hollie), Marina (Grant), Joseph (Madison), Livio, Anna, Massimo, and Maximus; Great-grandchildren Enzo, Ruby, Emilia, Jaxon, Grace, Carson, Mia, and Viviana. He is also survived by sister Lucia, sisters-in-law Liberata, Palminia, Concetta, and Dierdre; as well as numerous nieces, and nephews in Italy.
Nick is predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Grazia Piattelli and in-laws Pietro and Anna Triveri; brother and sister-in-law, Caterina and Raimondo Ferraro; brothers-in-law Rocco and
Verino; sister-in-law Yolanda, siblings, Elisa, Guiseppe, Alberto, Rocco, and Gabriele; and niece Tina.
