Obituary of Barbara Anna Greenwood

September 20, 1934 – Rosetown, Saskatchewan

August 29, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Barbara Greenwood (nee Smith), of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at the age of 88 years. 

Born in Rosetown, SK on September 20, 1934, Barbara was raised in McGee where the family operated the local general store. Barbara moved to Saskatoon to attend university and work in the boarding house which her parents owned and where she met her future husband of 64 years, Garth. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and began working in Weyburn as a dietitian. She and Garth were married in September 1957.

Barbara was a member of the Christian Women’s club and Aglow Canada. She was a longtime member of Bethany Chapel Church in Calgary and was active as a volunteer for the Heart & Stroke foundation and the Chevron Retirees. She enjoyed travelling, art and antique collecting, and winters in Palm Desert.

Barbara is survived by her brothers, Clarence Smith of Red Deer and James Smith of Rosetown; daughter Elizabeth (Kevin Chinook), son James (Nancy) Greenwood, daughter-in-law Diane Greenwood, grandchildren, Ryan (Laura-Lynn) Greenwood, Colin (Julie Barton) Greenwood, Erin (Keegan Ritchie) Greenwood, Megan Greenwood, and Jamie Greenwood; and great-grandchildren, Vienne, Ellis, and Jones Greenwood. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Garth, son Kevin Greenwood, sister Nora Stone, and brothers, Charles Smith and Lindon Smith.
