Obituary of Lorne Gordon Monkman

 

July 10, 1946 - Victoria, British Columbia

August 29, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

 

Lorne was born in Victoria, BC on July 10, 1946. He moved to Calgary, AB, in 1977 taking a job with Dome Petroleum and spent a few years in Houston, TX, for Amoco Petroleum.

 

Lorne was accepted at the University of Victoria as an officer cadet in 1964, graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in BCom in 1969 and an MBA from McMaster University in 1973.

 

Lorne met Sharon Mary Christine Dowdall in Vancouver, BC in 1967 and they were married in Ottawa, ON, on April 11, 1970.

 

1973 was a year of particular significance, where he finished his MBA from McMaster, started his career in Human Resources at Delhi Metal Products, bought the first house with Sharon in Simcoe, ON, and welcomed their first child Sean in December.

 

Lorne accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his grandchildren. Lorne enjoyed curling and golfing with friends, and relaxing with a nice scotch, neat.

 

Lorne’s most memorable vacation was when the whole family went on an Alaskan cruise for his 40th wedding anniversary.

 

He will be most remembered for kindness and generosity.

 

Besides his loving wife Sharon, Lorne is survived by his youngest son, Michael in Calgary, AB, and eldest son, Sean, his daughter-in-law, Keitha Robert and 2 grandchildren, Astrid and Annika, in Austin, TX.

 

Lorne is also survived by his brother Mel and sister-in-law, Cheryl Monkman in Vernon, BC; 2 sisters and 2 brothers-in-law, Louise and Ken Hancock, and Marilyn and Bill Bean on Vancouver Island; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 2:00PM, with a final public viewing the hour prior to the service.  Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Graveside Service to on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 2:45 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery.
