Obituary of David Leonard Moon
November 18, 1944 – Sydney, Australia
August 31, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
David Moon of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at the age of 78 years.
He immigrated to Canada from Australia in 1977.
He attended Belmore Boys School and graduated with a leaving certificate. He then went to Sydney Technical College and graduated with a degree in Chemistry. He then went on to further his studies at the University of Sydney. When he came to Canada he studied at the University of Waterloo and received a science degree.
Education was very important to David, and he read extensively. He was very curious about the natural world.
David nearly burnt his parent’s home down after he made some rocket fuel. After this little project he realized that some of his experiments could have had serious consequences.
David met his wife Marion in the UK, and they were married in 1977.
He was a member of the lunch time running group out of the University of Calgary. Their main goal was to chat and not step into gopher holes, nor get pecked at by the Canada Geese.
David accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his marriage to Marion, and the birth of his daughter Erin Kathryn.
David enjoyed skiing, hiking, painting, and running. His most memorable vacation were the ones that were a surprise.
David would occasionally, fall back into his Australian accent when surrounded by other Aussies. He could tell the difference between Aussies, and Kiwis, and South Africans. That is quite an accomplishment. He will be most remembered for his Australian accent which he could lay on very thick. He would watch people’s expressions very carefully, and then with a laugh, let them off the hook.
David is survived by his wife, Marion, his daughter Erin Kathryn, and Linden his grandson. He is survived by his sister Michelle, his brother Graham, and Roger. All these siblings live in Australia. David was predeceased by his father, Walter Thomas, his mother Eileen Voges, and his sister, Karen.
David loved passing on knowledge to others. In the last few years of his life, he taught his grandson Linden many things, most notably how to fold paper airplanes, and get them to fly.
A Celebration of David's life took take place at St. Paul's Anglican Church on Saturday, September 16 at 4:30 p.m. (7 Sunmills Green SE, Calgary AB,). Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with David’s family here.
