Alberta Jansonius

Obituary of Alberta Cornelia Jansonius

January 25, 1934 – Utrecht, Netherlands

September 2, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Bettie Jansonius (née Lokker) passed away on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at the age of 89 years.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Jan, of 56 years, and is survived by three children, Johannes, Paul (Diane), and Corine (Eric); three grandchildren, Brandon, Justin (Whitney), and Ryan; her sister Riet, her brother Ton, and her sister-in-law Els.

She was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and grew up in Barneveld. In March 1956, she left Holland with her new husband and his fresh Doctorate in Geology, sailing via Halifax to New York, and then by train to Edmonton, where Jan was hired by Imperial Oil, the start of a long and successful career. Bettie and Jan complimented each other perfectly, sharing the load and appreciating what each brought to their relationship and family. Amongst other qualities, Bettie was an excellent cook and caring Mom, with a wonderful wry sense of humour. She was an active cyclist; with Jan they put tens of thousands of kilometers on their bikes throughout South and Central Alberta, and they passed their love of cycling on to their children and grandchildren. She had a remarkable talent for cryptic crosswords (in both Dutch and English, her second language!) and jigsaw puzzles, both of which remained hobbies of hers until the very end.

At Bettie’s request, there will be no funeral service. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Bettie’s name to Nature Conservancy of Canada, 365 Bloor Street East, Suite 1501, Toronto, ON, M4W 3L4, Telephone: 1-877-231-3552, www.natureconservancy.ca or the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 20 Eglinton Avenue West, Suite 1600, Toronto, ON, M4R 1K8, Telephone: 1-800-616-8816, www. alzheimer.ca

Many thanks to the nurses and staff at Revera Scenic Acres, whose patient and friendly care was very much appreciated by Bettie and family.
