Obituary of Shirley Elizebeth Mitchell

May 18, 1945 – Halifax, Nova Scotia

September 6, 2023 – Airdrie, Alberta

Shirley Mitchell (nee Evans), of Airdrie, AB, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the age of 78 years.

Shirley was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 18, 1945. She emigrated to New Jersey in the early 1970s. She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and volunteered as a drug and alcohol counselor. Shirley accomplished much through her life and worked very hard to care for her seven children.

Shirley enjoyed playing bingo, crochet, and hanging out with the other ladies from the neighborhood, drinking coffee and having Mr. Softee Ice Cream. Shirley was a very hard worker and always did her best to take care of her children.

She will be most remembered for her witty sarcasm and strong uppercut.

Shirley is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Rosemary and Fernando Martinez and Crystal and Jonathan Santiago; her five sons and daughters-in-law, Darren and Louise Pettis, Daniel and Margarita Pettis, Shawn Mitchell, David  and Sara Pettis, and Derek Pettis; seventeen grandchildren, Ashlee, Austin, Jeremy, Caillou, Karla, Katie, Joshua, Brittney, Fernando Jr., Sergio, Arabella, Christian, Leilynn, Matthew, Christopher, Evan, and Andrew, as well as nine great-grandchildren.

Shirley was predeceased by her great-granddaughter Hope Mattina.

A Memorial Service will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Airdrie, 300 Towerlane Drive) on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
