Obituary of Kenneth Alexander SMITH

November 18, 1947 – Ponoka, Alberta July 24, 2018 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Ken beloved husband of Barbara Faye Smith (nee McPherson) of Calgary, AB, passed away on July 24, 2018 at the age of 70 years. Kenneth (Ken) Alexander Smith was born on November 18, 1947, in Ponoka, AB. He travelled extensively, when he was younger, as his father was in the Army, living from coast to coast in Canada and in Germany for four years, travelling with his family to many European countries. Ken was a welder and worked in many areas of his craft, ending his career at Maxfield Inc. operating their stress relieving furnace. Ken enjoyed travel and camping in his RV both with and without his grandchildren, camping near Calgary in our beautiful mountains or travelling to distant places and experiencing a variety of foods, and meeting people. Ken could talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime. That was both a blessing and a curse – especially when we were trying to get somewhere on time. He enjoyed volunteering. His many years as a Scouter with the handicapped group in Calgary were some of his fondest memories. He volunteered on the boards of his communities, acted as liaise to other organizations, and was available for fund raising activities for various charitable associations in and around Calgary. In his later years Ken enjoyed watching and discussing history shows with Lachlan, discussing Popular Science articles and just being with Keenan, exchanging back scratches and having his hair styled with Ada and walking to the bakery for cinnamon buns with Jessica. Ken was a man of many words and abilities who enjoyed surrounding himself with family and close friends. He appreciated anyone who would like to take part in a conversation that he could relay to others at a later date. As Ken was not a man who wanted people to sit around and be sad about his passing we ask that you take the time to remember Ken raise a glass and share any stories that you may have. Ken is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara; by his children, Ken W (Jackie) Smith and his daughter Katherine (Kathy) Smith; his grandchildren Lachlan, Keenan, Ada, and Jessica; his sister Debbie (John) Linnington; his in-laws Don (Diana) McPherson, Dolina (Ross) Watson, and John McPherson; his nieces and nephews, Sheri (Sheldon) Tangan, Chad McPherson, A.J. (Cassie) Harrold, Heather (David) Serani, Amanda Smith, James Smith, Michael Linnington, and Jennifer Linnington; his aunt Betty Goodwin and family, and Uncle Tim Cryer and family. Ken is predeceased by his parents Kenneth Girling Smith and Tina Katherine (Fehr) Smith; parents-in-law, Bill and Dolly (MacIver) McPherson; his grandparents, James and Anne (Girling) Smith, and Irving and Helen (Quiring) Fehr; his uncles, Brian Smith and Ray Goodwin; and his aunts Shirley (Smith), Goertzen, Margaret (Smith) Mickey, and Helen (Fehr) Cryer. In living memory of Ken Smith, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
