Obituary of Stefan Kalny

Stefan (Steve) Kalny, 86, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2023, at Agape Hospice following a long brave battle with chronic cardiac illness.

Stefan was born in Vienna, Austria to Stefan and Irene Kalny on May 3, 1937. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 where he settled in Calgary and married Terry, his wife of 66 years. He worked as a draftsman and designer for ATCO for 45 years, designing industrial buildings, structures, and camps, which allowed him to travel to locations around the world where he saw his designs constructed into reality. Steve also loved building, working on, and relaxing at the Waiparous cabin, where he and Terry would have wonderful times with many friends, eating great food, listening to music and of course telling stories of the ‘Old Country”. He was an expert fixer of all things, a lover of warm beer and a good schnapps and a friend to anyone he met.

Stefan’s favourite hours were spent with his family and of course his grandchildren. Stefan is survived by his loving wife, Theresa (Oberhofer) of Calgary, as well as his daughter Michele Kalny, son-in-law Andrew Crichton and grandsons Paul and Lucas, as well as Stefan’s son Steve Kalny, daughter-in-law Ulla and granddaughters Samantha, Julia, and Nicole (all of Calgary).

The family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to all of Stefan’s dedicated physicians, nurses, and caregivers over the many years, as well as his palliative care team and the staff at Agape hospice for all of their kindness and unwavering expert care in his last days.
