Obituary of Bob Thompson

February 19, 1946 – Cabri, Saskatchewan

September 26, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Bob Thompson, beloved husband of Darlene Thompson (nee Cator) of Calgary, AB, departed this world on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the age of 77 years. Born on February 19, 1946, in Cabri, SK, Bob was a man of adventure, mischief, and curiosity. Growing up in Abbey, SK, he likened his wonderful childhood to that of Huckleberry Finn, often found with his cousins, brother, and many friends plotting escapades that would become legendary.

His pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Saskatchewan, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree, setting the stage for a remarkable career. Nonetheless, his greatest achievement was his marriage to his bride, Darlene (nee Cator), a partnership that spanned 58 years. Together, they raised their daughters Denise and Sherise. Bob was a loving and engaged Dad and Grandpa, known for his endless opinions, his spectacular Christmas lights, adventurous spirit, and fun vacations. He adored his grandchildren Ali, Candace (Ogston), Bradley, and Lauren (Schultz). Bob had a passion for sports and politics, and possessed a unique talent for multitasking - he could be found watching the Blue Jays, zealously cheering for the Roughriders, and writing a thought-provoking opinion piece for the Globe and Mail, all at once! One of the highlights of Bob’s year was his annual goose hunting trip to Abbey, SK, with his hunting buddies, a tradition he cherished deeply.

Bob’s banking career with the BDC took him on a journey across Canada. Along the way, he became renowned for his innovative approach to helping entrepreneurs achieve their dreams. Bob was the ultimate problem-solver and mentor, always finding ingenious ways to make the impossible a reality. But Bob wasn’t just a businessman, he was also known as "Inspector Gadget", an early adopter of technology who loved exploring new gadgets and pushing the boundaries of creativity with them. To this day, we’re still trying to unravel some of his technological mysteries.

Always curious and a great lover of knowledge, he had passion for all things economic and political, and was an enthusiastic historian of WW1 and WW2. Coming from a long line of Chevrolet afficionado's at the Abbey Garage, Bob knew his way around a car, and could MacGyver just about anything, especially if using duct-tape. Bob left behind a legacy of laughter, adventure, and a passion for life. He loved Christmas, Thanksgiving meals made by his wife, especially involving gravy, and dark chocolate.  He was a man of great character and integrity and valued every ounce of life offered.  He was brave, strong, and unwavering. He will forever be remembered for his unique way of blending humor with wisdom, and his ability to make every moment a memorable one. He cared deeply for his friends and his country and loved his wife and family fiercely.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Ernest, and Elaine (Krismer), and his elder brother Dwayne (Joyce). He is survived by his brothers Eric (Cleo), and Perry; and sisters Doreen (Tschritter), and Sharyl (Enos) Erickson.

A heartfelt thanks to Eric and Cleo Thompson, Sharyl and Enos Erickson, Guy Thompson, Greg Andrews, Ron Brawn, Bob Stenhouse, and many families and friends for the love, and support they showed Bob during this challenging time. Bob was ever grateful for the outstanding care, compassion, and expertise shown by Dr. Dean Ruether, and team at Tom Baker Cancer Centre. The family is also grateful to radiologists Dr. Sinha, and Dr. Loewen.
