Sharon Syverson

Obituary of Sharon Eileen Syverson

January 18, 1943 - September 23, 2023

Sharon Syverson beloved wife of Oliver (Allan) Syverson of Calgary, Alberta passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the age of 80 years.

Sharon was born in Saskatoon, SK on January 18, 1943. She moved to Calgary in 1949, when her father’s work brought the family to Alberta. Sharon attended primary school at Earl Grey School and graduated in 1961 from Western Canada High School.

During high school, Sharon worked part-time at the Safeway grocery store where she met Allan. After graduating from high school, Sharon began work at the Safeway Head Office (McDonald’s Consolidated), where she worked until she and Allan got married and started a family. Sharon and Allan married in August 1963. They built their family home in Lakeview in 1966 where they have since lived and raised their family.

Having lost her own mother at a young age, Sharon was a caregiver and mother at her core. She went to great lengths to take care of her family. While raising her family, this included always having homemade meals and baking in the home, laundered and freshly pressed clothing in the closet, and a tidy home to feel safe and loved in. Sharon frequently volunteered to drive her daughters and their teammates to their sporting events and activities during their school years, always with a smile and snack in hand.

Sharon was also very athletic and loved sports. She played basketball in high school and later enjoyed bowling, curling and playing badminton with her husband. Sharon and Al had season tickets for the Calgary Stampeders for 25 years and they also enjoyed attending the Calgary Flames games. More recently, Sharon became an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan, never missing a game on TV.

Over the years, Sharon loved and could always be found watching her family’s many sporting events. This included her daughters’ soccer, baseball, hockey and ringette games, as well as her grandson’s baseball, lacrosse, and hockey games. She also enjoyed watching her husband coach ringette and hockey and umpire softball games. It should be noted that Sharon absolutely hated being cold but faithfully bundled up with blankets to keep warm in the stands.

Sharon also volunteered and gave freely of her time. Over the years, she volunteered at long-term care facilities teaching ceramics, the Blood Donor Clinic, the Rockyview and Foothills Hospitals, and at her grandson’s elementary school. She also selflessly helped neighbors and extended family members in their time of need without hesitation.

Sharon was a proud but never boastful woman. She took great pride in her home and family; she particularly enjoyed her yard and garden. Sharon took great interest in current events and was always well-read and eager to discuss the latest politics, sports, food, and fashion trends. Sharon also took great pride in her appearance, always fashionably dressed with her hair, makeup, and nails done.

While Sharon preferred the comforts of home, she did enjoy vacation time spent with Allan and the family. These included trips to Hawaii, San Francisco, Anna Maria Island Florida, Las Vegas, and Coeur d’Alene.

Besides her loving husband Allan, Sharon is survived by her daughters, Shawna (Virginia) and Alana (Craig); her grandson Aidan; and siblings, Gordon (Darlene) and Gail; along with six nieces and their families. Sharon was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Eileen.

In accordance with Sharon’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. A celebration of life will be arranged at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Sharon’s family here.
