Celebration of Life
Condolences
Hello Frank and Mark,
I just read this note, and so sorry to hear of Auntie Shirley's passing. She was such a dear friend of my mother, and along with Pat and Jack Hodgins, Ron and Inez Martyn, and Derek and Shirl, my parents Anne and Tim has many happy times in Calgary. You may not remember but Auntie Shirley came to Toronto in 2009 to stay with my mother following the tragic passing of my Dad a the end of thier cruise in February. Shirley was wonderful supporting my mother and being the best friend anyone could ever have. There was always the traditional box of Purdy chocolates from Auntie Shirley for my mum at Christmas, right up until my mother's passing also last year on May 16th, nearly one year ago. Treasure her memories, she was so special in our lives. Prayers, Michael Sheeres
Dear Frank and Mark and families,
A cousin of mine was recently requesting old family photos as she is putting together an album for the Horner family. Digging through the old photo albums I found a picture of mom and Shirley at the grade 12 graduation from their small high school in Blaine Lake . Together they beamed at the photographer and you could sense the excitement of two young women about to start their adult lives. There is another picture of them in their winter coats in front of the residence they shared as first year students at the university of Saskatchewan. Mom often spoke fondly of those days and the fun she and Shirley had.
Shirley was mom’s lifelong best friend and I have many happy childhood memories of hearing your mom and dad and my mom and dad enjoying happy hour. My dad so enjoyed your dad‘s sense of humour and Derek’s jokes were often quoted.
As a family, we all looked forward to your visits to Lacombe for SnoFest . It was highlight of a long Alberta winter.
Your mom radiated a gentle calmness. She had such a successful life and there is much to be celebrated in that.
I am sure you will miss her terribly.
Jean Flanagan, (daughter of Ruth Horner) and family.
I met Shirley through my girlfriend Shèrri Moore, and every time I came to Canada we were always happy to go visit Shirley. She was very kind and always found appetite for the Anton Berg marzipan I brought from Denmark. When Shèrri went to visit without me, Shirley would always ask about me. I only wish I had known her for a longer time - Klaus from Denmark
I spent most of my childhood in the Walker household, buddies with Mark. She was very much a mother for me. Im sure she picked me up when I fell, put a bandaid on when i was scraped or cut. I remember camping trips and overnight stays. In recent years i was always excited to see herr when she was at Barracks Wood and had time to dine with her and my mother. She was always eager to know what i was up to and asked many questions. I always felt I was important to her, maybe that is also why she was such a successful business woman. She was and will always be my second mother.
