Obituary of Evangeline Hope Smith

December 28, 2023 – Calgary, AB

Evangeline "Jean" Smith (nee Mackay) passed away on December 28, 2023, at the age of 84 years. She is survived by her son Brad, daughter Heather (Josef Hocher), her two precious grandchildren Camryn and Brennen, sisters Maryann Boychuk and Patricia Yeudall, sister-in-law Donna Mackay, 8 nieces and nephews, and her affectionate lap cat, Maggie (kitty).

Jean was predeceased by her husband Jack, parents Peter and Mary, sister Edith Stodola, brother Raymond Mackay and brothers-in-law Bill Yeudall, Mike Stodola and Ed Boychuk. 

Jean was an intensely creative individual. She painted, sewed, quilted, crafted, baked and so much more. She combined her love of books and children into a career working as a library assistant with the Calgary Public School Board. Her greatest passion, however, was gardening. She cultivated a backyard oasis at her home of 58 years in the community of Willow Park, enjoyed by family, friends and all manner of wildlife.

Jean's pride and joy were her children and grandchildren and she delighted in passing along news of their accomplishments and adventures along with any other "news of the day". She was blessed to have many close friends over the years, and it was her wish to acknowledge Lorraine Moro, Eleanor and Bob Anderson and Darlene and Stan Miller, her dear friends, until the end.

The family expresses their sincere thanks to the staff and volunteers at Rosedale Hospice for their compassionate care of Jean. As per Jean's wishes a private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers or donations we simply ask that when the season allows, friends and family take a moment to smell a peony or a rose, touch the soil, feel the mountain breeze on your face and remember Jean.
