Obituary of Michael Hughes

Michael Hughes of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the age of 84 years.
Michael graduated from the Southeast London Technical College with a degree in Instrumentation. He married Linda in 1970 and they moved to Calgary, AB in 1974.
He was a member of the Workshop Theatre and Confederation Theatre Society and volunteered with FLC Seniors Club. Michael accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his directing of “Calendar Girls”. Michael had a passion for Community Theatre, Soccer, particularly Manchester United, and Tennis. Michael’s most memorable vacation was when we had our last family vacation in Hong Kong and Thailand.
He will be most remembered for his love of life and his everlasting sense of humour.
Besides his loving wife, Michael is survived by his son Gavin, his daughter and son-in-law Shara and Tristan Newton, and his adored grandsons, Daemon and Aidan Newton, who all reside in Calgary. Michael is also survived by Linda’s sister Fay Watson of Belvedere, England and Fay’s children, Roger and Debbie Watson of Nottingham and Alaine and Chris Bowen of Crayford and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Kathleen Hughes, Linda’s parents, Jim and Lilian Hutchinson, his cousin Jean Dodds and by Fay’s husband Bryan Watson.
A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, October 27, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the home of Shara and Tristan Newton. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Michael’s family there.
