Obituary of Allan John Unrau
November 25, 1939 - October 22, 2023
Allan Unrau, beloved father of LaVerne and Janice, passed away after a sudden illness on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at the age of 83 years.
Allan was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on November 25, 1939. He grew up in Skiff, Alberta. Allan worked at Superior Propane in Lethbridge. He moved to Stettler, Alberta in 1977 and ran the Gulf Bulk Plant until 1982, when he and the family moved to Calgary where he worked for Petro Canada. In 1990, Allan began working with Case Equipment as a parts manager. He eventually retired and was proud to tell anyone who asked that he now had the best boss!
Allan was an active individual. He was happy camping, playing his accordion, bowling, square dancing, curling, golfing, lawn bowling, fishing, puttering in the yard, playing cards and visiting. One of the biggest highlights of his life was square dancing in the 1988 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. During his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling and volunteering as a driver for Cancer Foundation. One of his most recent and favorite holidays happened just a few years ago when Allan travelled to Niagara Falls with LaVerne, Mike, Janice and Joel.
Allan was always ready with a joke. His quick wit was infectious, and he has passed this humour down to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family events were always filled with laughter and hilarity.
Allan loved his family. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and we all loved him dearly. Dad (now known as Papa) was so proud of his girls. He was quick to tell anyone and everyone all about them. He was even more proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Papa attended hockey games, soccer games, highland dancing and archery. During Covid, Papa’s skill with a computer allowed him to watch and enjoy school plays and performances through Zoom or Skype, and to stay in touch with his family.
Papa will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his children, LaVerne (Michael) Bramall, and Janice (Joel) Young; grandchildren, Sean, Stephanie (Calvin), Kristopher (Brittany), Christina (Chad), and Sara; and great-grandchildren, Emma, Isabelle and Jackson. He is also survived by his twin brother William (Edith) and family, brother Ronald (Mary Ann) and family, sister-in-law Shelly and family. He was predeceased by his parents John and Helen Unrau (nee Lepp), brother Donald in 2018 and sister Margaret in infancy.
