Obituary of Margaret Cook

November 21, 1935 – Wayne, Alberta

November 4, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our extraordinary mother, grandmother, and friend. Margaret Cook (nee Kun) beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the age of 87 years, with her family by her side. She leaves to mourn her daughters Denise (Kevin), Jacqueline and Teresa (Terry) and her grandchildren Sophia, Jolan, Isobel, and Connor. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, William (Bill) in 2004 after 43 years of marriage.

Margaret was born in Wayne Alberta to Steve and Sophia Kun who had immigrated to Canada from Hungary. Her mother, brother Steve and her moved to Calgary when her dad passed away where she attended Western Canada High School. She was always proud of her Hungarian ancestry which is why her favorite flower was the poppy. She had many mementos in her home displaying it and prepared many traditional dishes to keep everyone fed and feeling special from cabbage rolls and borscht to Dobos Torte (a Hungarian layer cake).

After meeting Bill through her cousin and best friend Angie Brailsford, they wed and started a family where she chose to stay home to raise their kids. When the girls were older, she went back to work, first working at Woodwards. Then being the remarkable woman she was, went back to school to earn her medical assistant certificate as she had always wanted to be in the medical field. She then worked at the Foothills Medical Centre until her retirement in 1997.

Her utmost passion was spending time and caring for her husband, daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, baking, and gardening. Margaret and Bill started square and round dancing together and did this for many years. From attending and hosting conventions, starting their own club in the basement of their home, and even dancing in the opening ceremonies of the 1988 Olympics in Calgary.

She enjoyed traveling whether it be camping in trailers or flying to exotic and interesting destinations with family and friends. After retiring she kept a busy social calendar through exercise classes at the Varsity Community Centre and joining the West Hillhurst Go-Getters. Playing crib became one of her favorite hobbies where she recently achieved the coveted 29 hand. She cherished the adventures and the friendships she made along the way.

Her smile and laughter will be missed but we take comfort in the thought of her and Bill being able to dance together, once again.
