Obituary of Cecilia Mary Walter

January 14, 1926 - Hamilton, Ontario

November 14, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Cecilia Mary Walter (Cecile) was born in Hamilton, ON on Jan. 14, 1926 and passed away with family at her side in Calgary Nov. 14, 2023 at the age of 97 years 10 months. Cecile attended school at Loretto Academy in Hamilton and enjoyed playing basketball & badminton while there.

She lived in Hamilton and Dundas where at the age of sixteen, she met Herm, whom she married three years later in 1945.  They then made the adventurous move to Cornerbrook, NL, where they lived for three years, enjoying the outdoor life which included fly fishing (amid many mosquito-ridden stories) and cross-country skiing (more stories!).

Herm and Cecile then moved to northern Ontario, then to Kitchener, Preston, and finally Toronto. During this time, Cecile took flying lessons and over the following couple of years she took great pride in completing all the requirements for her pilot’s licence. She used to say that when she was a little girl, she would see the planes flying overhead, but never thought she’d ever actually get to fly in one, much less fly one herself. She also was an excellent badminton player playing for many years and winning several trophies. She also played archery, and took riding and swimming lessons.  She also enjoyed furthering her knowledge and took various courses in German and later in computers.

Cecile also loved to travel and often mentioned how happy she was to have seen and experienced many countries.  This included Hawaii and many other US states, Puerto Rico, England, Austria and Germany.  She even drove all the way to Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories & flew in to see Victoria Falls.

She also loved flowers, antiquing and going to auctions, craft shows and garden shows, particularly when accompanied by her daughters.

In later years, Cecile lived for a number of years in Picton, ON and then finally in Calgary, AB.

She is survived by her three daughters, Marilyn Sprissler (Martin Sprissler), Lindy Fergusson (late Hugh Fergusson) and Joanne Cevik (Turgut Cevik), her six grandchildren, Curtis Sprissler (Ellyn Sprissler), Kirstin Sprissler (Simon Grafton), Keith Fergusson (Yuen-ying Carpenter), Kendra Fergusson (Jeremy Tuff), Danyel Knapp-Fisher (Jason McLean) and Rory Knapp-Fisher (Kylie Sandham) and eight great-grandchildren, (Walter, Elsa, Iris, Jerry, Ajax, William, Maya and Pleione)

Celebration of Life details to be arranged at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Cecilia’s family here.
